Acer’s Ambitious Entry into Gaming Handhelds: The Nitro Blaze Trio

Acer made a strong statement in the rapidly growing Windows gaming handheld market by launching three distinct models in its Nitro Blaze lineup. Announced between late 2024 and early 2025, the Nitro Blaze 7, 8, and 11 aimed to cater to different user preferences with varying screen sizes while sharing powerful core specifications. This multi-pronged approach positioned Acer as a serious contender against established players like the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and MSI Claw.

The Nitro Blaze Lineup

Nitro Blaze 7
The smallest and most compact of the trio, the Nitro Blaze 7 was the first to be unveiled around September 2024 at IFA. It features a 7-inch Full HD (1080p) 144Hz IPS touchscreen, making it ideal for users who prioritize portability. Powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7 8840HS processor with integrated Radeon 780M graphics, it includes up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 2TB PCIe NVMe SSD storage. The device runs Windows 11 and comes with features like Hall Effect joysticks and triggers for improved precision and durability.

Nitro Blaze 8
Unveiled at CES 2025, the Nitro Blaze 8 strikes a balance between size and immersion with its 8.8-inch WQXGA (2560×1600) 144Hz IPS touchscreen. The display offers 500 nits of brightness and excellent color coverage (~97% DCI-P3), delivering vibrant visuals for gaming on the go. It shares the same Ryzen 7 8840HS chipset, 16GB RAM, and storage options as its smaller sibling. Weighing around 720g, it remains relatively manageable while providing a noticeably larger screen experience. Pricing for this model started around $899.

Nitro Blaze 11
The largest and most ambitious model in the series, the Nitro Blaze 11 boasts a massive 10.95-inch WQXGA (2560×1600) 120Hz IPS touchscreen with 500 nits brightness and ~98% DCI-P3 color gamut. This near iPad-sized display makes it suitable not just for gaming but also for media consumption. Additional features include a built-in stand, front camera for streaming, and the option for detachable controllers. As expected, it carries a higher price tag, starting around $1,099, and feels significantly bulkier due to its size.

Shared Features and Performance

All three Nitro Blaze handhelds run Windows 11 and are equipped with strong integrated graphics capable of running modern AAA titles at respectable settings, especially when using AMD’s FSR upscaling technology. They include USB4 ports, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, DTS:X Ultra audio, and around 55Wh batteries (varying slightly by model). Acer also bundled three months of PC Game Pass and its own Game Space software for quick access to performance tweaks and game libraries.

Market Challenges and Future Direction

Despite the promising hardware, the Nitro Blaze series encountered delays in availability. By early 2026, reports suggested the original lineup had been put on hold or faced significant setbacks, with limited market presence. Acer responded by shifting focus toward newer models, such as the Predator Atlas 8 featuring Intel’s latest Arc graphics, improved cooling, and better efficiency. The company also explored companion devices like the Nitro Blaze Link, a streaming-focused handheld similar to Sony’s PS Portal.

Acer’s decision to launch three differently sized handhelds at once demonstrated clear ambition to capture multiple segments of the portable gaming market. While execution faced hurdles, the move highlighted the growing interest in Windows-based handheld PCs and Acer’s willingness to experiment with screen sizes and form factors.

Whether these devices will see wider availability or evolve into future iterations remains to be seen, but Acer has certainly left its mark on the handheld gaming conversation.
