The Malayali Father Who Never Played for India: The Son Who Will Play at the FIFA World Cup

In the sun-drenched football fields of Kerala, where passion for the game runs deep but success at the highest level has often remained elusive, a poignant family story is unfolding on the global stage. Jamshid Thachankandy, a talented footballer from Thalassery who once dreamed of wearing the India jersey, never got the chance to play for the senior national team. Decades later, his son, Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid, is set to achieve what his father could not — stepping onto the biggest stage in football as a player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid, a 19-year-old winger, has been included in Qatar’s 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Born and raised in Doha on June 16, 2006, to Malayali parents, Tahsin has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in Qatari football. He plays for Al-Duhail in the Qatar Stars League and developed through the renowned Aspire Academy system. Having already featured for Qatar in World Cup qualifiers, he is poised to become one of the first players of Indian origin — and certainly the first with deep Kerala roots — to participate in the men’s FIFA World Cup.

His father, Jamshid Thachankandy (also known as Hibasil Jamshid in some accounts), hails from Thalassery in Kerala, with family connections to Kannur and Kozhikode. A promising player in his youth, Jamshid represented Kerala at the sub-junior level in 1985 and played university football for Calicut University alongside future Indian internationals. However, injuries cut short his ambitions, preventing him from earning a senior cap for India. In 1996, seeking better opportunities, he moved to Doha with his wife Shyma, who is from Valapattanam in Kannur. There, he worked as an accountant while nurturing his family far from the timber business he left behind in Kerala.

Kerala boasts one of India’s most passionate football cultures, producing legendary players and fervent fans, yet it has never seen one of its own feature in a men’s senior FIFA World Cup for India. Tahsin’s selection, even while representing the country of his birth, has sparked immense pride and celebration across the state. Social media and local media have hailed it as a “quiet history” moment — a symbol of Malayali talent finding its way to the world stage through the global Malayali diaspora.

The journey from the dusty maidans of Thalassery to the glittering pitches of the World Cup encapsulates the dreams of countless fathers and sons in football-loving families. For Jamshid Thachankandy, it is a full-circle moment of pride and reflection. For Tahsin, it is the beginning of what many hope will be a stellar international career. As Qatar prepares for the tournament, the story of this Kerala-origin family reminds the world that football’s beautiful game often transcends borders, carrying with it the unfulfilled aspirations of one generation and the realized potential of the next.
