Gadkari Launches Ethanol Stove: A Cheaper, Cleaner Alternative to LPG for Indian Kitchens

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has introduced an innovative indigenous ethanol-based cooking stove technology, promising to deliver household cooking at a lower cost than traditional LPG cylinders. The announcement was made at the ‘Mitron Ke Bich’ programme in Nagpur, reinforcing the government’s push towards biofuels and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

How the Ethanol Stove Technology Works

According to Gadkari, the stove uses a simple mixture of approximately 7% ethanol in water to generate a stable, stove-like flame suitable for everyday cooking. He emphasized that the technology is fully developed in India and offers a practical solution for millions of households.

“By mixing 7 per cent ethanol in water, stove-like flames are generated, and it is cheaper than cooking gas. It is indigenous to our country,” the minister stated.

Key Advantages Highlighted by the Minister

  • Lower Cooking Costs: The ethanol-water blend is expected to significantly cut down household fuel expenses compared to subsidized yet increasingly expensive LPG cylinders.
  • Cleaner and Greener Option: Ethanol produces fewer harmful emissions, potentially reducing indoor air pollution — a major health concern linked to traditional cooking fuels like LPG, kerosene, or biomass.
  • Boost to Farmers and Biofuel Economy: The initiative supports India’s ethanol blending programme, which has grown from 1.5% in 2014 to nearly 20% in 2025. It creates new demand for ethanol derived from sugarcane and other crops, providing additional income to farmers while helping reduce India’s massive crude oil imports (currently around 87%).
  • Energy Self-Reliance: This development aligns with broader efforts to promote biofuels beyond transportation fuels, advancing the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the energy sector.

Potential Impact on Households

Rising LPG prices and concerns over fossil fuel dependency have made alternative cooking solutions increasingly relevant for both rural and urban families. If successfully scaled, the ethanol stove could offer an affordable, environment-friendly option that supports sustainable development.

Gadkari also announced a Rs 40-crore initiative alongside this launch to promote scientific temperament among young Indians, indicating a holistic approach to innovation in energy and education.

Challenges Ahead

While the concept is promising, several practical aspects remain to be addressed for widespread adoption:

  • Availability and distribution of ethanol at the household level.
  • Safety standards for storage and usage.
  • Affordability and durability of the stoves themselves.
  • Real-world performance, efficiency, and long-term viability compared to LPG.

Detailed information on commercial rollout, pricing, pilot projects, or timelines has not yet been fully disclosed.

A Step Towards Sustainable Cooking

This launch reflects the government’s continued focus on homegrown technologies that tackle daily challenges while advancing environmental and economic goals. As more details emerge on its efficiency and accessibility, the ethanol stove could potentially transform cooking practices across India, benefiting both consumers and the agricultural sector.

For now, it stands as another milestone in India’s biofuel journey, offering hope for cheaper and cleaner kitchens in the years ahead.
