Mithun Chakraborty Slept in Parks & Asked Reporter for a Meal After National Award Win: Son Mimoh Reveals Father’s Heart-Wrenching Struggle

Veteran Bollywood icon Mithun Chakraborty, a National Award winner and Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient, rose from extreme poverty and hardship to become one of Indian cinema’s most loved superstars. His son, actor Mimoh Chakraborty (Mahaakshay Chakraborty), recently shared deeply personal and inspiring stories about his father’s early struggles in Mumbai, painting a vivid picture of resilience and determination.

Sleeping in Parks and Evading Police

Mimoh recounted how his father arrived in Mumbai with big dreams but faced brutal realities. With no money for accommodation, Mithun often slept in parks. At night, constables would wake him up, beat him, and chase him away, warning him not to sleep there.

“Dad’s struggle stories used to rattle me. He would tell me, ‘Mimoh, there was a time when I used to sleep in parks and at night constables would come and beat me and chase me away…’” Mimoh shared emotionally.

These were not one-off incidents. Mithun has spoken in the past about sleeping on footpaths and under construction sites during his initial days in the film industry.

National Award Win, Yet No Money for Food

One of the most striking revelations involves the time right after Mithun won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut film Mrigayaa (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen. Despite the prestigious honour, financial struggles continued.

A reporter tracked him down for an interview. Mithun’s condition was straightforward: “I will give you the interview, but first buy me a meal because I haven’t eaten.” This happened immediately after winning the National Award, underscoring that critical acclaim did not instantly bring financial security.

Sweeping Gym for Workout Access

Mimoh also highlighted his father’s discipline and hunger for self-improvement. Mithun would reach Talwalkars gym at 6 or 6:30 AM but couldn’t afford the fees. He made a deal with the watchman — he would sweep and clean the place and use the bathroom to freshen up in exchange for using the facilities.

This dedication to fitness in the face of adversity helped build the strong, dancing, and action-ready star the world later celebrated.

How These Stories Shape Mimoh Today

Mimoh says these accounts give him strength during his own challenges, including trolling and industry rejection.

“Whenever challenges come my way… I remember all his stories. If a man forged by steel and fire did not give up, then who are we to give up? You have to keep going. You have to stare into the fire,” he reflected.

Hearing the stories often brings tears to his eyes. Mimoh wonders how his father survived such harsh beginnings and never gave up.

A Legacy of Perseverance

Mithun Chakraborty’s journey from sleeping rough to becoming a legend continues to inspire millions. His son is now carrying forward the legacy through projects like the web series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter.

Mithun Da’s life is a powerful reminder that success is rarely handed on a platter. It is built through relentless effort, patience, and an unbreakable spirit. His story motivates not just his family but every aspiring artist and dreamer facing tough times.
