Shillong Embarks on Electric Bus Era: A Leap Towards Cleaner, Smarter Urban Mobility

Shillong, June 2026: Shillong is embracing a greener future as the Meghalaya government rolls out its electric bus initiative under the “Ka Bos Jong Ngi” (Our Bus) project. This marks a decisive shift towards sustainable public transport in the hill capital, aiming to combat traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and offer reliable commuting options for residents.

Historic Flagging Off and Fleet Details

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma formally flagged off a fleet of 84 new buses, including 55 modern electric buses inducted under the central government’s PM eBus Sewa Scheme. The event, held at the New Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, highlighted the state’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility.

These electric buses are equipped with advanced features tailored for passenger comfort and operational efficiency in Shillong’s challenging hilly terrain:

  • Air-conditioned interiors for comfortable rides.
  • Mobile charging points at seats.
  • Real-time GPS tracking and digital/e-ticketing systems.
  • Wheelchair accessibility for inclusive travel.
  • Battery range of approximately 150-200 km on a single charge, depending on models (including 9m 27-seater and 7m 22-seater variants).

A pilot service has commenced on the IIM Shillong to Upper Shillong route, operating daily from 7 AM to 9 PM. Plans are underway to expand the network significantly, with Shillong sanctioned for around 50-55 electric buses initially, contributing to a broader target of enhanced public transport capacity.

Addressing Shillong’s Mobility Challenges

Shillong has long struggled with narrow roads, rising private vehicle ownership, and seasonal traffic issues. The introduction of these zero-emission buses aligns with the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy, which seeks to increase the share of public transport, create low-emission zones, and promote sustainable development in the ecologically sensitive region.

Key expected benefits include:

  • Environmental Impact: Significant reduction in air and noise pollution, helping preserve the city’s pristine hills and greenery.
  • Cost Efficiency: Lower long-term fuel and maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel buses.
  • Commuter Convenience: Predictable schedules, modern amenities, and improved safety.
  • Health and Economic Gains: Cleaner air for better public health and smoother mobility to support local commerce and tourism.

In a symbolic move to build public confidence, CM Sangma and other leaders, including opposition figures, ditched their official convoys to ride the new buses during related events, urging citizens to adopt the service.

Broader Vision and Future Plans

The “Ka Bos Jong Ngi” initiative goes beyond buses. It aims to create a reliable, citizen-centric transport system. Officials are working on expanding charging infrastructure, including a dedicated e-bus depot in areas like Umsawli/New Shillong Township. The government envisions scaling up to serve thousands of daily commuters as more buses join the fleet.

Alongside the bus launch, the government supported local entrepreneurship by distributing food carts to beneficiaries under the Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) scheme, linking sustainable transport with livelihood generation.

While the launch has generated optimism, success will hinge on consistent service reliability, adequate charging infrastructure, staff training, and affordable fares to encourage a shift from private vehicles. Public feedback from the pilot phase will be crucial for fine-tuning operations.

For Shillong residents, this electric bus journey promises quieter streets, fresher air, and a more efficient way to navigate the city. As one of the pioneering efforts in Northeast India’s hill stations, it could set a benchmark for sustainable urban transport across the region.

The hills of Shillong are witnessing the dawn of a cleaner, smarter mobility era — one electric bus at a time.
