Captain Lalrinawma Sailo, a 27-year-old officer from Mizoram serving in the elite 4 PARA (Special Forces), has etched his name in the state’s military history. He became the first commissioned officer from Mizoram to be awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. President Droupadi Murmu conferred the honour upon him during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 8, 2026.
A Moment of Pride for Mizoram and Northeast India
This prestigious recognition has filled Mizoram with immense pride. Captain Sailo is only the second Mizo to receive the Kirti Chakra — the first being Subedar Chalhnuna Lushai of the Assam Rifles, honoured back in 1968.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma extended heartfelt congratulations, praising the officer for bringing glory to the state. The Mizoram government also announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh in recognition of his exceptional service.
From Aizawl to the Indian Army’s Elite Forces
Born in March 1999 in Chanmari, Aizawl, Captain Sailo displayed early signs of discipline and leadership. He received his foundational military grooming at the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun. He joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2018 and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 2021 after passing out from the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
Driven by a desire to serve at the highest level, he volunteered for the gruelling selection process of the 4 PARA Special Forces. Known for its intense training and high-risk missions, 4 PARA demands exceptional physical and mental resilience — qualities Captain Sailo has consistently demonstrated.
His father, Saihmingliana Sailo, expressed deep pride in his son’s achievements, noting that the young officer continues to remain deployed in forward areas, fully committed to his duties.
Gallantry in Operation Sindoor
The Kirti Chakra has been awarded to Captain Sailo for his “daunting courage and devotion to duty” during a high-risk counter-terrorism operation in Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir. Serving as the Assault Team Commander, he exhibited outstanding leadership, tactical brilliance, and bravery while under heavy enemy fire.
The operation, linked to Operation Sindoor — a decisive retaliatory strike following a terror attack in Pahalgam — saw his team penetrate a heavily fortified terrorist hideout. In a fierce 58-second close-quarters battle, Captain Sailo led from the front, neutralising key terrorists, including a high-profile target. His composure and decisive actions under extreme pressure were instrumental in the success of the mission.
While specific operational details remain classified, his valour highlights the professionalism and sacrifice of India’s Special Forces operating in challenging environments.
Significance of the Kirti Chakra
The Kirti Chakra is bestowed for acts of valour, courage, and self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy during peacetime. At just 27 years of age, Captain Sailo’s achievement stands as a powerful inspiration for the youth of Mizoram and the entire Northeast. It proves that dedication, hard work, and patriotism can elevate individuals from any region to the pinnacle of national service.
His story resonates strongly in a region that has produced many brave soldiers but often seeks greater representation at commissioned ranks in elite units.
Captain Lalrinawma Sailo’s journey from the hills of Aizawl to the ranks of 4 PARA SF is a shining example of quiet professionalism and unwavering commitment to the nation. Mizoram and India salute this courageous son. His Kirti Chakra is not merely a personal honour but a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
Jai Hind!
