India Achieves Major Defence Milestone as First Made-in-India C-295 Aircraft Completes Maiden Flight

In a landmark development for India’s defence manufacturing sector, the first Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft assembled in India successfully completed its maiden test flight. The flight took place on June 10, 2026, from the Final Assembly Line facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, marking a significant step forward in the country’s push for self-reliance in aerospace technology.
The Indian Air Force described the event as a “big milestone for Indian aviation and defence.” The aircraft, produced through a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus Defence and Space, performed essential post-production checks and manoeuvres to validate its systems during the test flight.
Background of the C-295 Programme
India signed a ₹21,935 crore contract in September 2021 for the procurement of 56 C-295 aircraft to replace the ageing Avro-748 fleet of the Indian Air Force. The deal is one of the most significant ‘Make in India’ initiatives in the aerospace sector.
Under the agreement:
- 16 aircraft will be supplied in fly-away condition from Spain.
- The remaining 40 aircraft are being manufactured and assembled in India at the TASL facility in Vadodara.
This programme represents the first major private-sector-led aerospace manufacturing project in India. It involves substantial local production, with over 85% of the aircraft structure and final assembly being done domestically. The initiative has already onboarded more than 37 Indian suppliers, creating a strong ecosystem of aerospace manufacturing in the country.
Key Capabilities of the C-295
The C-295 is a modern twin-turboprop tactical transport aircraft designed for rugged operations. Its main features include:
- Capacity to carry up to 71 troops or equivalent cargo.
- Excellent short take-off and landing (STOL) performance on semi-prepared and rough airstrips.
- Rear ramp for quick loading, unloading, and para-dropping operations.
- Strong performance in high-altitude, hot, and humid conditions — making it highly suitable for operations across India’s diverse terrains, including the Himalayas, Northeast, and island territories.
While certain critical systems and engines are currently imported, plans are in place to progressively increase indigenous content to 75-80% as the programme matures.
Strategic Importance
The successful maiden flight of the first India-made C-295 highlights India’s growing capabilities in high-technology defence manufacturing. The project is expected to generate high-skilled employment, strengthen the domestic supply chain, and reduce reliance on foreign imports for critical military platforms.
Defence experts see this as a game-changer for Indian aerospace. The first India-assembled aircraft is slated for delivery to the Indian Air Force later in 2026, with full production ramp-up to follow. This development aligns with the broader goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and will enhance the IAF’s tactical airlift capabilities significantly.
The achievement has been widely celebrated as a proud moment for the nation, showcasing successful collaboration between Indian industry and global technology partners. It reinforces India’s ambition to become a major player in global defence manufacturing and exports in the coming years.
