Tura Bypass Project Advances: Compensation Disbursal Begins for Affected Landowners in South West Garo Hills

Ampati, June 13, 2026: In a key development for infrastructure growth in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, the South West Garo Hills administration has started disbursing compensation to landowners impacted by the Tura Bypass National Highway Project. This follows the finalization of compensation awards under the National Highways Act, 1956.

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner and Competent Authority for Land Acquisition (CALA), South West Garo Hills, issued an official notification confirming that payments will be processed through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). All disbursals require successful Aadhaar authentication for seamless direct bank transfers.

Landowners and interested persons have been strongly advised to link their bank accounts with Aadhaar immediately. Those who have not yet submitted their bank details are urged to visit the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Ampati without delay to avoid any payment hurdles.

According to the notice, compensation will be deemed paid after 60 days from the publication of the notification, provided Aadhaar linkage and authentication are completed.

60-Day Deadline to Vacate Acquired Land

In parallel with compensation disbursal, authorities have directed all landowners and occupants to surrender possession of the acquired land parcels within 60 days from the date of the notice or its publication. Failure to comply may lead to authorities taking possession with police assistance, as per the provisions of the National Highways Act.

The affected land primarily covers stretches for the bypass construction, including areas from Gambagre village (Km 7.410) to Indikgre village (Km 16.620) in South West Garo Hills. The land has already vested absolutely in the Central Government, free from all encumbrances.

Affected individuals can contact the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and CALA in Ampati for any clarifications regarding documentation, claims, or the process.

Project Overview and Significance

The Tura Bypass is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting Tura town, improving regional connectivity, and boosting economic activity in the Garo Hills. The project involves constructing a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders spanning approximately 29.03 km, connecting NH-127B (starting at Km 57.500) to NH-217 (ending at Km 108.750). It is being executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

The Centre has sanctioned around ₹951 crore for the project, with financial bids opened earlier in 2026. Once completed, the bypass is expected to enhance transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, support logistics, and open up new opportunities for local businesses and communities.

This step marks significant progress in national highway development in western Meghalaya. Prompt action by landowners on Aadhaar linkage and land handover will help ensure the project moves forward smoothly while safeguarding their compensation rights.
