India Builds Its Own Iron Dome: Mission Sudarshan Chakra and Project Kusha Herald a New Era of Self-Reliant Air Defence

India is making significant strides in developing a comprehensive, indigenous multi-layered air and missile defence system, often compared to Israel’s renowned Iron Dome. Tailored to the country’s vast geography and diverse threat landscape, this homegrown shield aims to protect critical infrastructure, population centres, and strategic assets from aerial threats ranging from drones and cruise missiles to ballistic missiles.

The Strategic Imperative

India faces complex security challenges from multiple adversaries, including short-range rockets, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and advanced ballistic threats. While Israel’s Iron Dome excels in intercepting short-range rockets over a compact territory, India’s system must provide nationwide coverage, integrating advanced surveillance, AI-driven command networks, and interceptors across land, sea, and air domains.

In his Independence Day address in August 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra — an ambitious initiative to establish a robust air defence shield by 2035. Named after Lord Krishna’s divine weapon, the mission focuses on self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) by integrating indigenous technologies with existing assets for seamless, network-centric defence.

Key Pillars of India’s Defence Shield

Project Kusha
This DRDO-led programme is the cornerstone of the long-range component, often described as an indigenous alternative to the S-400 system. It features three interceptor variants:

  • M1: ~150 km range
  • M2: ~250 km range
  • M3: 350-400 km range

These missiles are designed to counter aircraft, stealth fighters, cruise missiles, drones, and precision-guided munitions. Testing is slated to begin in 2026, with induction targeted around 2028-2030. Defence officials have hailed it as a “game changer” for India’s air defence capabilities.

Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Programme
India recently achieved a major milestone with three consecutive successful tests on June 10-11, 2026, at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. The advanced AD-1 and AD-2 interceptors demonstrated exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric capabilities against simulated intermediate-range ballistic missiles (up to 5,000 km range). This positions India among a select group of nations with credible multi-layered BMD against ICBM-class threats.

Complementary Systems

  • S-400 Triumf (Russian): Long-range backbone already being deployed.
  • Barak-8 (Indo-Israeli): Medium-range surface-to-air missiles for naval and land use.
  • Akash and QRSAM: Indigenous short-to-medium range systems for rapid response.
  • Akashteer and IACCS: Advanced command-and-control networks for real-time integration.
  • Emerging technologies like counter-drone systems and directed energy weapons further strengthen the layered approach.

India-Israel Collaboration

India’s defence ties with Israel remain strong, with joint developments like the Barak-8 and discussions during high-level visits for potential technology sharing in air and missile defence. However, the focus stays firmly on indigenous development and manufacturing to reduce import dependence.

Significance and Challenges

This multi-layered shield enhances deterrence, protects key cities and borders, and boosts self-reliance in critical defence technology. It also promises cost-effectiveness compared to purely imported systems while fostering innovation in AI, radar, and missile tech.

Challenges include scaling up production, achieving full inter-service integration, and meeting ambitious timelines. Yet, consistent test successes and strong governmental push indicate steady progress toward operational capability by 2035.

India’s pursuit of its own “Iron Dome” not only strengthens national security in a volatile region but also underscores its emergence as a key player in advanced defence systems. As threats evolve, this indigenous shield will play a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s skies.
