Why Musk and Other Tech Execs Want as Many Babies as Possible

In an era dominated by artificial intelligence breakthroughs, space ambitions, and rapid technological disruption, a surprising topic has captured the attention of Silicon Valley’s most influential figures: having more babies. Elon Musk, the father of at least 12-14 children, has repeatedly warned that declining birth rates pose a greater threat to humanity than many other global challenges. He is not alone. Other tech leaders, including investors and executives like Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, and Brian Armstrong, are vocal proponents of what has come to be known as the pronatalist movement—the push to encourage higher fertility rates. But why are these billionaires so concerned about population growth in a world long worried about overpopulation?

The answer lies in stark demographic data and a long-term vision for human civilization. Global fertility rates have plummeted over the past several decades. According to various sources, the total fertility rate (TFR)—the average number of children a woman has in her lifetime—has fallen from around 4.9 in the 1950s to approximately 2.3 in recent years, with projections indicating further decline toward 1.8 by 2100. The replacement level needed to maintain a stable population (absent migration) is roughly 2.1. Today, about 71% of the world’s population lives in countries or territories below this threshold.

Pension systems strain under fewer contributors, healthcare demands rise, military recruitment becomes challenging, and consumer markets shrink. Musk has described this as leading to “civilizational collapse,” drawing parallels to historical societies like the Romans, where prosperity led to lower birth rates and eventual vulnerability.

Musk’s advocacy stands out for its intensity and consistency. He has tweeted and spoken extensively on the issue, calling extreme birth rate collapse “the biggest danger to human civilization by far.” In interviews, he has emphasized that many smart people still believe the world is overpopulated, but the numbers tell the opposite story. “If people don’t have more children, civilization is going to crumble,” he has stated. For Musk, this is not abstract; it ties directly to his broader goals, including making humanity multi-planetary. A shrinking population undermines the talent pool and workforce needed for ambitious projects at SpaceX, Tesla, and beyond.

He argues that low fertility is a natural tendency in prosperous, peaceful societies without major external threats. Cultural shifts—delayed marriage, career priorities, high living costs, and changing social norms—exacerbate the problem. Musk practices what he preaches, expanding his own family significantly and occasionally offering provocative suggestions, such as framing having children as a vote for the future.

This pronatalist perspective extends across Silicon Valley. Peter Thiel, the PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist, has discussed demographic decline in interviews, highlighting risks of societal stagnation and even extinction without intervention. Sam Altman of OpenAI has invested in fertility technologies, including efforts to develop artificial eggs and advanced embryo screening. Brian Armstrong of Coinbase and others back startups focused on reproductive tech, such as genetic optimization tools from companies like Orchid, which enable detailed embryo screening for diseases and traits.

These leaders often combine pronatalism with technological optimism. Investments flow into longevity research, assisted reproductive technologies (ART), and even polygenic embryo selection—tools aimed at producing healthier, potentially higher-achieving children. The vision is not just more babies, but “better” ones equipped to thrive in an AI-driven world. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder, and others have also shown interest in these areas.

Underlying these views are several interconnected motivations. Economically, sustained population growth supports innovation, GDP expansion, and tax bases. Tech companies rely on a steady influx of talented engineers, entrepreneurs, and consumers. A shrinking global population could slow progress on grand challenges like climate solutions, space exploration, and AI development. Musk has noted that AI and robotics could offset some labor shortages, but they cannot fully replace human creativity, ambition, and societal dynamism.

Philosophically, many of these executives are long-termists who believe humanity’s potential is vast. They worry that depopulation represents a failure of imagination—a prosperous civilization choosing decline over expansion. For Musk, expanding consciousness to other planets requires billions of humans, not a contracting population. There is also a cultural critique: modern societies undervalue family formation amid careerism, high housing costs, and work cultures that make parenting difficult.

Pronatalists point to policy ideas like family incentives, affordable childcare, housing reforms, and cultural shifts to celebrate parenthood. Some, including figures connected to the movement, have influenced discussions around “motherhood medals” or targeted support in political circles.

However, the push has drawn criticism. Detractors argue that tech billionaires promoting large families overlook the economic barriers most families face—skyrocketing childcare, education, and housing costs. The economic models championed by these same leaders, including intense work cultures and wealth concentration, may contribute to the conditions making parenthood less appealing. Some view the emphasis on genetic optimization as echoing eugenics, prioritizing “elite” reproduction over broad societal support.

Others question the urgency. Migration can temporarily bolster workforces in developed nations, and AI advancements may dramatically change productivity. Demographers note that while declines are real, predictions of total collapse vary, and fertility trends can shift with policy or cultural changes. Critics also highlight that pronatalism sometimes focuses narrowly on high-IQ or wealthy groups rather than universal family support.

Despite debates, the data underscores a genuine challenge. India’s fertility rate falling below replacement, even as it remains the world’s most populous nation, has drawn Musk’s attention, highlighting how education and development correlate with lower births globally. Similar patterns appear in country after country.

For tech executives, encouraging more babies is not mere personal preference but a strategic imperative for a thriving future. Musk sums it up starkly: great civilizations often end not through conquest alone, but through internal demographic decay amid prosperity. In their view, reversing this requires both cultural reevaluation and technological ingenuity.

As global fertility continues its downward trajectory, the pronatalist message from Silicon Valley is gaining traction. Whether it translates into meaningful policy shifts or broader societal changes remains to be seen. What is clear is that these leaders see human flourishing—quite literally through more humans—as essential to solving the biggest problems of our time. In a world racing toward automation and artificial intelligence, they remind us that the ultimate resource is people themselves.
