India’s ambitious push toward ethanol-blended petrol has hit a rough patch. What began as a strategic move to cut oil imports, support farmers, and lower emissions has triggered widespread public anger. In late 2025, the government declared it had achieved its 20% ethanol blending target (E20) five years ahead of schedule. Yet instead of celebration, the policy has sparked protests, social media outrage, and demands for choice at the pump. Vehicle Compatibility and Long-Term Damage Fears

Owners of pre-2023 vehicles worry that continued use will shorten engine life or trigger expensive repairs. Some report rough idling, starting difficulties, and the need for more frequent servicing. While major automakers and government testing agencies maintain that extensive trials show no widespread verified damage, and that minor adjustments during routine maintenance can mitigate risks, public trust remains low. Many feel the burden of proof has been placed on consumers rather than manufacturers or policymakers. Calls for clear warranty statements and potential compensation for affected vehicles have grown louder.
Lack of Choice and Transparency at the Pump
