In the hills of Meghalaya, a quiet but powerful transformation is underway. What was once seen primarily as a hobby or recreational activity is steadily evolving into a structured industry with real economic and career potential. At the center of this shift stands Wanshankupar Suchiang, better known as DJ Wanshan, and his organization Jubilant Divine E-Sports (JDE). Through vision, persistence, and strategic support from the state government, Suchiang is helping lay the foundation for a sustainable esports ecosystem in Meghalaya.

Wanshankupar Suchiang is not just an entrepreneur — he is a multifaceted personality who bridges music, technology, and competitive gaming. As a music producer and DJ, he already had a strong connection with youth culture. Recognizing the massive untapped potential in gaming, he founded Jubilant Divine E-Sports on July 12, 2022, along with a team of passionate young professionals.
His goal was clear from the beginning: to move esports in Meghalaya beyond casual play and position it as a legitimate professional domain. Suchiang understood that for gaming to gain respect and create livelihoods, it needed proper infrastructure, training programs, competitive platforms, and — most importantly — a change in public perception.
Today, he serves as the CEO of JDE and has become one of the most visible faces of the emerging esports movement in the state. His selection among the Top 75 Entrepreneurs of the Chief Minister’s E-Champion Challenge (CMECC) 6.0 under PRIME Meghalaya stands as recognition of both his personal journey and the broader promise of his venture.
Jubilant Divine E-Sports: Building the Ecosystem Brick by Brick
Jubilant Divine E-Sports was established with a clear mission — to nurture local talent, provide professional training, and create platforms for competitive play. The organization aims to make Meghalaya a premier destination for esports in India while generating employment and promoting digital entrepreneurship.
One of the most significant milestones came on July 16, 2025, when JDE inaugurated Meghalaya’s first professional esports office in Umpling, Shillong. The event was graced by Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla, along with local leaders and well-wishers. This office is not just a physical space — it represents a major step forward for the entire region. It houses a dedicated esports broadcast and streaming setup, making JDE the first organization in Northeast India (and among very few in the country) to have such professional infrastructure.
Through this center, the team plans to offer specialized training in streaming, hosting, and shoutcasting. These are emerging career paths that go beyond playing games and open doors for content creators, commentators, and technical professionals. Suchiang has emphasized that esports is not about fantasy gaming or gambling — it is officially recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under “multisport events.”
The Numbers Behind the Movement
According to estimates shared by Jubilant Divine E-Sports, Meghalaya already has over 600,000 active gamers. Of these, between 30,000 and 50,000 engage in some form of competitive gaming, while an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 participate in local, national, and even international tournaments.
These figures highlight both the scale of interest and the gap that exists between casual players and professional-level talent. JDE is working to bridge this gap through structured training, regular tournaments, and exposure to bigger platforms. The organization has already represented Meghalaya at events like the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series (BMPS), marking historic moments for the state.
Government Support and the Role of PRIME Meghalaya
The growth of esports in Meghalaya has received meaningful backing from the state government. In a landmark move, the Meghalaya government became one of the first state governments in India to sponsor an esports team when it supported Jubilant Divine E-Sports for the BMPS in 2024.
More broadly, PRIME Meghalaya — the state’s flagship entrepreneurship initiative — has played a crucial role. Through the Chief Minister’s E-Champion Challenge (CMECC) 6.0, promising entrepreneurs like Wanshan Suchiang receive incubation support, mentorship, funding opportunities, and access to networks that help scale their ventures. The program attracted thousands of applications and selected the top 75 for intensive support.
This combination of private initiative and public support is creating a fertile ground for new-age industries in a state traditionally known for tourism, agriculture, and traditional sectors.
Changing Perceptions and Creating Livelihoods
One of the biggest challenges facing esports in Meghalaya — and India at large — is perception. Many still view gaming as a distraction or a waste of time. Wanshan Suchiang is actively working to change this narrative. He often speaks about the discipline, strategy, teamwork, and rigorous training that competitive gaming demands — qualities that mirror traditional sports like football or athletics.
His forward-looking statement captures this shift in thinking: “Trust me, in five years, you’ll start sending your children to our centre for training.” He envisions a future where esports centers become as normal as cricket academies or music schools.
Beyond playing, the ecosystem creates opportunities in content creation, event management, broadcasting, coaching, and technology services. For a state with a large young population, these avenues can provide meaningful employment and reduce migration in search of jobs.
Challenges on the Road Ahead
Despite the progress, significant challenges remain. Infrastructure beyond Shillong is still limited. Consistent high-speed internet, quality training facilities, and regular competitive platforms are needed across districts. Awareness among parents and educational institutions is still evolving. Additionally, sustainable revenue models for esports organizations in smaller states are still being tested.
However, the momentum is clearly building. The recognition of esports at the national level, combined with state-level support through PRIME and individual leaders like Suchiang, is helping overcome these hurdles step by step.
