
Every year, a handful of teenagers achieve something extraordinary. They secure All India Rank 1 in the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced, the gateway to the Indian Institutes of Technology. For millions of aspirants, that rank represents the ultimate validation of years of relentless effort. Yet the real story begins after the celebrations fade and the newspapers move on. What becomes of these young people once the exam is behind them?
Tracking the trajectories of IIT-JEE AIR 1 toppers from 2000 to the mid-2020s reveals a clear evolution in ambition, opportunity and preference. Early toppers often gravitated toward pure research and academia. Later cohorts increasingly chose high-stakes quantitative finance, global technology roles and elite overseas universities. The exam itself has remained punishingly difficult, but the world these toppers enter has changed dramatically.
In the early 2000s, research still held strong appeal. Nitin Gupta, who topped in 2000, studied computer science at IIT Kanpur before immersing himself in bioinformatics, neuroscience and behavioural science. He spent nearly a decade in the United States at institutions such as the University of California San Diego and the National Institutes of Health. Eventually he returned to India, joining the faculty at IIT Kanpur with the explicit goal of strengthening the research ecosystem at home. His choice reflected a generation that still saw intellectual contribution to India as a primary measure of success.
Others from that era followed similar paths. Piyush Srivastava completed a PhD at the University of California, Berkeley and later joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. Raghu Mahajan left IIT Delhi after two years for undergraduate studies at MIT, continued to Cambridge and Stanford, and eventually settled into theoretical physics research at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru. These careers prioritised depth of inquiry over immediate financial reward.
By the mid-to-late 2000s the pattern began shifting. More toppers completed their degrees at IIT Bombay, particularly in computer science, and moved directly into industry or high-paying quantitative roles. Dungara Ram Choudhary rose through senior engineering and technical leadership positions at Oracle. Shashank Dwivedi earned a master’s from MIT and joined Deutsche Bank. Sushant Sachdeva completed a PhD at Princeton in algorithms and theoretical computer science and later joined the faculty at the University of Toronto while maintaining associations with advanced AI research organisations.
The decade of the 2010s accelerated the move toward global markets and quantitative finance. Prudhvitej Immadi, after graduating from IIT Bombay and a short stint in industry, cleared the UPSC examination with an All India Rank of 24 and entered the Indian Administrative Service—one of the rare cases of an AIR 1 choosing public service at the highest level. Most of his peers took a different route. Arpit Agrawal entered quantitative finance at Tower Research Capital. Sarvesh Mehtani, the 2017 topper, joined Optiver as a quantitative trader after finishing computer science at IIT Bombay. Pranav Goyal, who topped in 2018, followed a similar path and works as a quantitative trader at Jane Street in Hong Kong. Kartikey Gupta, the 2019 topper, completed his degree at IIT Bombay, undertook research internships, and joined Google as a software engineer.
Several toppers from this period left IIT midway or immediately after graduation for elite American universities. Chitraang Murdia (2014) transferred from IIT Bombay to MIT to pursue physics and later continued to a PhD at Berkeley. Satvat Jagwani (2015) also moved to MIT before taking Silicon Valley engineering roles. Aman Bansal (2016) went from IIT Bombay to Stanford and into the AI startup ecosystem. These decisions reflected growing confidence that top-tier global institutions and companies offered faster growth and broader exposure than staying within the Indian academic or corporate system.
The 2020s generation is still early in its journey, yet the same preferences are visible. Chirag Falor topped in 2020 with an exceptional score and chose MIT over any IIT, studying artificial intelligence and physics. He has already received departmental awards and has been associated with research environments including CERN. Mridul Agarwal, who set a record percentage in 2021, joined IIT Bombay for computer science and is now working as a quantitative researcher at Tower Research Capital. Vavilala Chidvilas Reddy, the 2023 topper, opted for computer science at IIT Bombay. Ved Lahoti, who secured AIR 1 in 2024 with one of the highest marks in recent history, began at IIT Bombay before transferring to MIT on a fully funded path. The most recent toppers remain in the early stages of undergraduate study, but the directional pull toward either premier Indian computer science programmes or direct admission to leading American universities is unmistakable.
Several broader patterns emerge from these trajectories. First, computer science at IIT Bombay has functioned as a reliable launchpad for more than a decade. Second, quantitative trading firms—Jane Street, Optiver, Tower Research and similar houses—have become magnets for the mathematically gifted. These roles reward precisely the combination of speed, accuracy and abstract problem-solving that the JEE Advanced demands. Third, a significant proportion of toppers eventually work outside India, primarily in the United States, though a meaningful minority return or never leave. Fourth, pure academic careers, while still present, no longer dominate the way they did in the early 2000s.
It is important to note the limits of public information. Many toppers maintain low profiles, and complete career data is not available for every rank holder. Entrepreneurship appears less frequently among pure AIR 1s than among high rankers more broadly, though examples exist. Civil services remain an outlier rather than a trend. Gender imbalance is also stark: the tracked AIR 1 cohort from 2000 to 2019 consisted entirely of men, reflecting the wider demographic realities of the exam’s top ranks during that period.
What these stories ultimately illustrate is the conversion of exceptional examination performance into long-term opportunity. The intellectual horsepower required to finish first among more than a hundred thousand candidates translates readily into research, algorithm design, financial modelling and systems engineering. Yet the destinations chosen by successive generations reveal changing incentives. Earlier toppers often measured success by contribution to knowledge and nation-building. Later ones have operated in an environment of abundant global capital, remote work possibilities and rapidly expanding technology sectors. Both sets of choices are rational responses to the conditions of their time.
The prestige of an IIT-JEE rank 1 remains undiminished. It still opens doors that few other credentials can match. But the path after that door is no longer singular. Some build laboratories and train the next generation of scientists. Others price risk in global markets or design the systems that power modern software. A few enter public administration. Most, regardless of destination, continue to operate at a level of cognitive intensity that few professions demand. Their stories, taken together, offer a quiet map of how India’s most rigorously selected young talent has navigated the shifting landscape of the twenty-first century.
