
For years, the biggest practical barrier between iPhone users and Android phones has not been features, cameras, or battery life. It has been the sheer hassle of moving your digital life from one ecosystem to the other. Contacts and photos usually made the trip. Messages often arrived incomplete. Passwords, Wi-Fi networks, home screen layouts, and carrier settings frequently stayed behind, forcing hours of manual cleanup. Android 17 changes that equation in a meaningful way.
With the latest version of Google’s operating system, the company has rebuilt its Android Switch experience from the ground up. Developed in collaboration with Apple and shaped in part by regulatory pressure for better data portability, the new system is wireless-first, deeply integrated into both platforms, and capable of transferring far more information than any previous tool. For the first time, switching feels less like a migration project and more like a guided setup.
Why Switching Used to Be Painful
Older transfer methods relied heavily on cables, third-party apps, or limited wireless options. Even when a connection worked, iOS restrictions blocked many data types. Passwords and passkeys rarely moved. eSIM profiles usually required contacting the carrier. Home screen arrangements, wallpapers, alarms, and call history almost never transferred. Apps reinstalled as empty shells, leaving users to recreate logins, settings, and in-app data from scratch.
The result was predictable. Many people who considered leaving iOS ultimately stayed put simply because the friction felt too high. Google’s previous Switch tool improved the process over time, but it still left notable gaps. Android 17 closes most of them.
What the New Android Switch Actually Transfers
The upgraded tool, now built directly into Android 17 rather than offered as a standalone app, moves a much wider range of data wirelessly during initial device setup. Core categories that worked before—photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendars—have been improved. SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage conversations now transfer with reactions, stickers, and thread structure intact in many cases.
Newly supported or significantly expanded categories include:
- Passwords and passkeys
- Wi-Fi network credentials
- Google Account details
- eSIM profiles (carrier support is expanding but not yet universal)
- Home screen layouts, app placements, and wallpapers
- Alarms
- Call history
- Files and folders
- Calendar attachments
- Apple Notes attachments and labels
- Key accessibility settings
Google and Apple also introduced cross-platform APIs that allow developers to enable genuine in-app data transfer. When an app supports the feature, users can bring over more than just the installed application; they can bring over the data inside it. This is a substantial step beyond the old model of reinstalling apps and starting over.
Not everything is perfect. Photo albums are still listed as coming soon in some reports, and full eSIM transfer depends on the carrier. Still, the list of what moves cleanly is now long enough that the residual manual work is far smaller than before.
How the Process Works
The experience is designed to feel native. On a compatible Android 17 device, the setup flow presents a clear option to copy data from an iPhone. A QR code or on-screen prompts establish a wireless connection. No separate app needs to be downloaded on either phone, and complex permission hurdles have been reduced. Wired transfer remains available as a fallback for those who prefer it or encounter wireless limitations.
The iPhone side requires iOS 26.3 or later. Because the system is integrated into both operating systems rather than layered on top, the process is more reliable and less confusing for first-time switchers.
Availability and Rollout
Android 17 itself began rolling out to Pixel devices in mid-June 2026. The enhanced Switch experience started reaching a portion of those devices around the same time and has continued expanding. It is also available on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8, announced at the company’s July 2026 Unpacked event, through the Smart Switch framework. Google has said more Android devices will receive the capability in the weeks and months ahead.
The timing is deliberate. By embedding the improved transfer tools into the latest major Android release and highlighting them alongside new foldable hardware, Google is making the case that the platform is not only competitive in features but also easier to join.
The Bigger Picture: Regulation and Competition
Part of the improvement stems from regulatory requirements, particularly the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. The DMA pushed both Apple and Google to reduce lock-in by making data more portable and simplifying processes such as eSIM transfers. The result is a rare example of the two companies cooperating on infrastructure that benefits users who want to change platforms in either direction.
This matters beyond Europe. Once the technical plumbing exists, it tends to roll out more broadly. Consumers elsewhere gain from the same tools even if the original pressure came from one region. Greater ease of switching should, in theory, increase competitive pressure on both platforms to keep improving their products rather than relying on inertia.
What Still Matters Beyond the Transfer
An easier switch does not automatically make Android the better choice for every user. iMessage blue bubbles, FaceTime continuity, and the broader Apple ecosystem remain powerful reasons for many people to stay. Hardware preferences, software customization, camera philosophy, AI features, and long-term update policies all still influence the decision.
What Android 17 removes is the artificial friction that previously amplified those ecosystem advantages. Users who want to try a Pixel, a Galaxy foldable, or another Android device can now do so with far less disruption to their daily digital habits. The cost of experimenting has dropped.
For Google, the upgrade is strategically smart. The company has spent years improving the core Android experience, expanding Gemini capabilities, and refining hardware through the Pixel line. Reducing the barrier to entry helps those investments reach more people.
The rebuilt Android Switch is not a complete solution to every migration challenge, but it is the most substantial improvement in years. By making passwords, eSIMs, home screens, and richer message history transferable without cables or extra apps, Google has addressed the complaints that repeatedly surfaced whenever people discussed leaving iOS.
As the feature reaches more devices and carrier support for eSIM transfer broadens, the practical difference between platforms will continue to shrink. Switching operating systems will never be entirely seamless—different design languages, app ecosystems, and service integrations ensure some adjustment remains—but it no longer needs to feel like starting over.
