As UK Heatwaves Intensify, Is Installing Air Conditioning Worth the Investment?

British summers are no longer the mild, reliably temperate affairs many grew up with. In 2026 alone, the country has already experienced multiple official heatwaves by mid-July, with temperatures repeatedly climbing into the mid-30s Celsius and warm nights becoming more common. What once felt like rare extremes now arrives earlier, lasts longer and returns more frequently. The question many homeowners are asking is straightforward: given this shift, is it worth installing air conditioning?

The data leaves little room for doubt that the climate is changing. Met Office analysis shows that the number of days above 30°C has risen sharply. In parts of south-east England, the average has moved from one or two such days per year in earlier baseline periods to more than five in the most recent decade. For Greater London, both hot days above 30°C and warm nights above 18°C have more than quadrupled when comparing 2016–2025 with 1961–1990. The decade as a whole was more than 1.3°C warmer than the late 20th-century average. Scientists warn that heatwaves will continue to grow longer and more intense, with a realistic chance of 40°C returning within the next dozen years.

UK homes were largely designed for a cooler climate. Thick insulation, small windows and layouts that retain heat work well in winter but turn many properties into traps during prolonged hot spells. Conservatories, south-facing rooms, loft conversions and modern airtight builds are particularly prone to overheating. Surveys and research have found that a substantial proportion of dwellings exceed comfortable indoor temperatures for extended periods each summer. The Climate Change Committee has highlighted that a meaningful share of the housing stock will require some form of active cooling as global temperatures rise further.

The health consequences are serious. Rapid analyses of the May and June 2026 heatwaves estimated more than 2,700 heat-related deaths in England and Wales, with a significant portion attributable to the additional heat driven by human-induced climate change. Older people, those with existing health conditions, young children and people living in poorly ventilated homes face the greatest risks. Excess heat stresses the cardiovascular system, worsens respiratory problems and disrupts sleep, which in turn affects productivity and mental wellbeing. For many households, staying cool is no longer simply a matter of comfort.

Against this backdrop, air-conditioning sales have climbed. Estimates put the number of UK homes with some form of cooling at around four million, roughly double the figure from a few years earlier, though still only a small percentage of the total housing stock. The options range from cheap portable units to permanent split systems and whole-home ducted installations.

Portable air conditioners typically cost a few hundred pounds and require no professional fitting. They can be moved between rooms and offer quick relief, but they are relatively inefficient. Warm air is expelled through a hose, often leaving a gap that allows some heat back in, and they tend to be noisier. Fixed wall-mounted split systems, the most common permanent choice for British homes, generally cost between £1,500 and £3,500 installed for a single room. Multi-room setups or more powerful systems can run from £3,500 to £10,000 or higher. Ducted whole-house systems sit at the top of the price range.

Running costs matter as much as the upfront outlay. Modern units typically consume electricity at a rate that works out to roughly 20p to 60p per hour depending on size, efficiency rating and current tariffs. Moderate daily use in one or two rooms often adds £1–£2 a day during heatwaves. Higher-efficiency inverter models and systems that also provide heating in winter (air-to-air heat pumps) deliver better value over time. Some heat-pump installations may qualify for government support when replacing fossil-fuel heating, improving the financial case.

The advantages of air conditioning are clear when temperatures climb. It delivers consistent cooling, reduces humidity, filters dust and allergens, and improves sleep quality. For people working from home, recovering from illness, or caring for vulnerable family members, the difference can be substantial. Dual-purpose heat-pump systems offer year-round usefulness, heating efficiently in winter while cooling in summer.

There are drawbacks. Electricity demand rises, which can increase bills and, unless powered by solar or timed to periods of high renewable generation, adds to carbon emissions. External units require space and, in some locations, may need planning permission. Maintenance involves regular filter cleaning and occasional professional servicing. Poorly sized or inefficient units waste money and energy. There is also a risk that easy access to cooling leads people to rely on it more than necessary rather than combining it with simpler measures.

Experts consistently advise treating air conditioning as a last resort rather than the first solution. Passive strategies remain highly effective and far cheaper. Closing blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows during the day, opening windows for night-time ventilation when outdoor temperatures drop, using fans, improving external shading, and ensuring good insulation all reduce heat build-up. Green roofs, reflective coatings and strategic planting can help in the longer term. Many homes can stay tolerable through a combination of these steps for all but the most extreme periods.

When deciding whether to install a system, several practical factors come into play. Does the property regularly become uncomfortably hot, especially at night? Are there vulnerable residents? Is the home used for work during the day? Can passive measures be improved first? Budget, available outdoor space for an external unit, and the possibility of pairing cooling with solar panels or a heat pump should all be weighed. Getting multiple quotes from certified installers and checking efficiency ratings (higher SEER and SCOP figures are better) is essential.

For some households—those in overheating-prone modern flats, older people living alone, or families in sun-trapping properties—the investment is already worthwhile. For others, a portable unit for the hottest weeks, combined with better ventilation habits, may be enough for now. As heatwaves become more routine, the balance is shifting. Cooling is moving from luxury to a practical adaptation for a growing number of homes.

The wider challenge remains clear. The UK was built for a climate that is disappearing. Improving the resilience of the housing stock, expanding access to efficient cooling for those who need it most, and continuing efforts to cut emissions are all part of the response. For individual homeowners, the decision is more personal: assess how badly the home overheats, calculate the real costs, exhaust the low-energy options first, and then choose the most efficient system that fits the budget and lifestyle. In a country facing hotter, longer summers, thoughtful preparation for heat is no longer optional.
