Apple Is About to Change the Mac Forever

Apple is preparing the most sweeping transformation of the Mac in more than a decade. What began as steady progress with Apple silicon is now accelerating into a full redesign of hardware, chips, and how users interact with the machines. Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in mid-2026 outline a multi-year overhaul that touches every model in the lineup, introduces the first touchscreen MacBooks, and fundamentally alters Apple’s silicon roadmap to prioritize on-device artificial intelligence.

This is not another routine refresh cycle. The company is rewriting rules that have defined the Mac since the M1 era, responding to surging demand for AI workloads while addressing long-standing design and capability gaps. The result will be a Mac that feels more continuous with the iPhone and iPad, far more capable of local AI processing, and visually and interactively different from anything currently on the market.

A Complete Lineup Overhaul Begins This Fall

Apple plans to update every Mac it currently sells over the next two years. The wave starts in fall 2026 with a refreshed entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the new base M6 chip and the first new iMac models in roughly two years. These early machines largely retain existing industrial designs while delivering meaningful performance and efficiency gains through the new silicon.

Close behind come updates to the Mac mini and Mac Studio, though exact timing depends on memory supply constraints that have already stretched lead times on current high-end models. The MacBook Air is expected to receive M6 updates in early 2027, again with modest visual changes. A more affordable MacBook Neo is also in development, reportedly moving to an A19 Pro-class chip with increased memory and new color options, expanding Apple’s reach into lower price points.

The Mac Pro, long a specialist machine, has already been discontinued, with Apple directing professional users toward the Mac Studio. This consolidation reflects a broader strategy: fewer form factors optimized more aggressively around real-world AI and creative workloads rather than pure expandability.

Silicon Strategy Breaks with Tradition

Perhaps the most consequential shift is happening at the chip level. Apple is skipping high-end versions of the M6 generation entirely. While a base M6 will appear in entry-level machines later this year, there will be no M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra. Instead, the company is accelerating development of an AI-focused M7 family scheduled to arrive in 2027 for Pro and Max variants, with an Ultra version potentially following in 2028.

This marks the first time Apple has broken its established pattern of rolling out a full tiered generation. The decision is driven by the need to deliver substantially stronger Neural Engine performance, higher memory bandwidth, and graphics capabilities better suited to local AI models and graphics-intensive software. Early details suggest the M7 Ultra could support dramatically higher unified memory configurations, potentially approaching the kind of capacity previously associated with dedicated AI accelerators.

By jumping ahead, Apple is accepting a temporary gap in which some high-end machines continue on current M5 Pro and Max chips while the company concentrates engineering resources on the next architecture. The trade-off is clear: shorter wait for a bigger leap in on-device intelligence.

The Touchscreen OLED MacBook Arrives

The most visible change for everyday users will be the first MacBook with a touchscreen. High-end 14-inch and 16-inch models, sometimes referred to internally in ways that suggest a “MacBook Ultra” branding, are expected between late 2026 and early 2027. These machines feature a completely redesigned chassis, OLED displays, and touch input.

Apple has long resisted touch on the Mac, arguing that the precision of a trackpad and keyboard remains superior for serious work. That stance is softening. The new laptops are being tested with versions of macOS that include interface adjustments to make touch a useful secondary input rather than a primary replacement for traditional controls. Expect refined window management, improved gesture support, and better handling of hybrid mouse-and-touch workflows.

OLED technology brings deeper blacks, higher contrast, and potentially thinner designs. Combined with the new industrial design, these machines represent the first major MacBook Pro redesign since 2021. A further redesigned entry-level 14-inch model with M7 silicon is planned for later in 2027, suggesting the new design language will cascade across the range.

Software Evolves Alongside Hardware

Hardware changes would mean little without corresponding software progress. macOS 27 Golden Gate, expected in fall 2026, continues the Liquid Glass design language introduced in macOS Tahoe while refining it for better readability and consistency. More importantly, it deepens Apple Intelligence features and introduces a more capable Siri built around on-device processing.

Golden Gate also ends major software support for the remaining Intel Macs, completing the transition that began with the M1. All future development assumes Apple silicon, allowing engineers to optimize without the constraints of older architectures. Continuity features continue to tighten the relationship between Mac, iPhone, and iPad, making the Mac feel less like a separate computer and more like the high-performance node in a single personal computing system.

Why This Moment Matters

Several forces are converging. Demand for local AI processing has grown rapidly as users run agent-style workflows, large language models, and creative tools that benefit from low latency and privacy. Apple’s custom silicon gives it an advantage in efficiency, but the company needs more capable Neural Engines and memory systems to stay competitive with dedicated AI hardware and high-end Windows machines.

At the same time, the Mac has enjoyed a sales resurgence. Apple is capitalizing on that momentum with a broader product range that includes more accessible options while pushing the high end further. The touchscreen decision also closes a gap that competitors have exploited and that many users have requested for years.

There will be friction. Users who bought recent high-end MacBook Pros may find the next meaningful upgrade delayed until the M7 generation. Software will need time to adapt fully to touch. Some traditional Mac workflows may feel different as the platform continues its long-term convergence with iOS and iPadOS design principles.

Yet Apple has managed similar transitions before. The move from PowerPC to Intel, the abandonment of optical drives, the shift to Apple silicon, and successive interface redesigns all produced short-term disruption followed by a stronger platform. The current changes follow the same pattern on a larger scale.

What Users Should Expect

In practical terms, the next two years will bring faster base models, dramatically more capable high-end machines optimized for AI, thinner and more modern designs with OLED and touch, and software that treats the Mac as part of a unified Apple ecosystem rather than a standalone desktop computer.

For creative professionals, the combination of higher memory ceilings, stronger Neural Engines, and improved displays should unlock smoother local AI-assisted workflows. For everyday users, the touchscreen and refined interface may make the Mac more approachable without sacrificing the precision that power users demand. For those still on Intel machines, the message is unambiguous: the future belongs exclusively to Apple silicon.

Apple is not simply releasing new Macs. It is redefining the category’s role in an AI-driven computing landscape. The machines that emerge from this cycle will look different, feel different, and perform differently from the Macs that defined the first half of the decade. The Mac as we have known it is ending. What replaces it is being built right now.
