Mohamed Salah has completed one of the most unexpected transfers of the 2026 summer window. The Egyptian superstar, who left Liverpool as a free agent after nine trophy-laden years, is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a two-year contract. The deal, confirmed in early August 2026, has stunned the football world. A player widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest foreign imports is heading not to one of Istanbul’s traditional powerhouses, nor to the riches of Saudi Arabia or Major League Soccer, but to a club based on Turkey’s Black Sea coast.

The move marks the end of an extraordinary chapter at Anfield. Salah scored 257 goals in 442 appearances for Liverpool, helping the club to two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Club World Cup and multiple domestic cups. They are the most successful Turkish side outside Istanbul, with seven league titles — six of them won in a golden era between 1976 and 1984, and a long-awaited seventh in 2022 that ended a 38-year drought. Yet they have spent much of the modern era in the shadow of the “big three.” Their European coefficient ranking sits outside the top 140, and attendances at Papara Park have sometimes reflected a sense of diminished ambition.
Salah changes that equation overnight. He becomes the biggest name ever to wear the claret and blue, joining a squad that already includes former Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana (on loan), target man Paul Onuachu, and Cape Verde World Cup performers Wagner Pina and Sidny Lopes Cabral. The commercial upside is enormous. Shirt sales are expected to soar, particularly among Arab and Egyptian fans, while the club’s profile across the Middle East will rise sharply. Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş have both spent heavily this summer in an attempt to close the gap — the former adding Mason Greenwood and Nathan Aké, the latter signing Leandro Trossard and chasing further reinforcements. Trabzonspor’s capture of Salah is a direct response to that arms race. Whether one player, even one of Salah’s quality, can tilt the balance remains uncertain. For Trabzonspor supporters, long accustomed to living in the shadow of Istanbul, the arrival of one of the game’s most recognisable faces feels like validation. For Salah it offers European football, a lucrative contract, and the chance to write a new chapter far from the pressures of the Premier League.
