Japan has long been a leader in practical responses to heat. For more than two decades, “kuchofuku” or air-conditioned clothing has been common among outdoor and industrial workers. These garments use small battery-powered fans to push air across the body, accelerating the evaporation of sweat and lowering perceived temperature. The technology has proven effective, but the bulky, utilitarian designs have rarely suited white-collar environments. Office workers and sales staff still face long outdoor stretches during daily commutes or client visits, often while expected to maintain a neat appearance. As temperatures climb and humidity remains high, the gap between practical cooling and professional clothing has become more obvious.
Yofuku no Aoyama, known for accessible formal and business-casual clothing, addressed this gap by applying its apparel expertise to FZN’s existing fan systems. The result is a shirt outer styled to look like a conventional short-sleeved button-up rather than traditional workwear. From the front, the garment presents a clean, professional silhouette. Snap buttons run down the placket, a simple open pocket sits on the left chest, and side slash pockets add everyday utility. A hem drawcord allows the wearer to cinch the bottom edge, helping trap circulating air inside the shirt for more effective cooling.
The real engineering sits at the sides of the lower back. Two fans, each weighing approximately 95 grams, are positioned laterally rather than directly in the center of the back. This placement was chosen so the wearer can sit without the units pressing uncomfortably against a chair. A 165-gram rechargeable battery pack powers the system. The fans push air inward under the fabric, creating a continuous flow that evaporates moisture before it soaks through and becomes visible. Three intensity levels are available. The highest setting moves about 53 liters of air per second and delivers roughly 3.5 hours of runtime. The lowest setting stretches battery life to around 10 hours. Intermediate settings fall between those extremes, giving users flexibility depending on outdoor conditions and the length of their day.
The shirt is made from 100 percent polyester, a practical choice for durability, quick drying, and ease of care. Once the fans and battery are removed, the garment is fully machine-washable. Available colors are navy blue and charcoal gray, both restrained enough for most Japanese office environments. Sizes run medium, large, and extra-large (LL). The complete entry set, which includes the shirt, two fans, battery pack, and connecting cables, sells for 17,490 yen. Weight is kept relatively modest so the shirt does not feel burdensome during a full day of wear. Noise levels have not been heavily promoted, suggesting the fans are functional rather than silent.
