America’s Missile Shortage: How the Iran War Has Emptied Critical US Stockpiles

Five months into the conflict with Iran, the United States finds itself facing an uncomfortable military reality. Its most advanced air-defense interceptors and long-range precision strike missiles have been expended at a pace that production lines cannot match. According to analyses from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and multiple sources familiar with internal Pentagon data, inventories of several key systems have fallen dramatically, raising questions about readiness for other potential conflicts.

The war, which began in late February 2026, has consumed weapons designed for high-end warfare against peer adversaries. Defensive systems that protect troops, bases, and allies from ballistic missiles and drones have been used heavily. Offensive weapons that allow strikes from safer distances have also been drawn down. The result is a thinner margin of safety and harder choices for commanders.

The Scale of the Drawdown

Public estimates, drawn from budget documents and corroborated by sources speaking to major news outlets, paint a consistent picture. Before the Iran war, the United States held roughly 2,200 to 2,330 of its more modern Patriot interceptors. By late July 2026 those numbers had fallen to between 759 and 827. That represents a reduction of more than 60 percent.

THAAD interceptors, the system designed to stop ballistic missiles at higher altitudes, started the conflict with approximately 452 missiles in the inventory. Recent estimates put the remaining stock between 234 and 278. Some reporting has described even steeper proportional losses for THAAD, approaching four-fifths of the pre-war total in certain assessments.

The Army’s surface-to-surface long-range missiles have seen the sharpest relative decline. Sources familiar with the data told Reuters that the United States has used “virtually all” of its global stockpile of Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and the newer Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM). These weapons, fired from HIMARS and similar launchers, provide accurate strikes at ranges of up to roughly 190 miles for ATACMS and longer for PrSM. Their near-exhaustion means any future intensification of the conflict could force greater reliance on manned aircraft operating closer to threats.

Tomahawk cruise missiles, the Navy’s primary land-attack weapon launched from ships and submarines, have also taken a heavy hit. Roughly half of the global inventory has been expended since the start of the war, according to sources. Other systems, including certain Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles and Standard Missiles used by the Navy, have seen smaller but still significant reductions in the range of 20 to 30 percent or more in earlier phases of the fighting.

These figures reflect global inventories. Munitions have been moved from other theaters, including the Pacific and Europe, to support operations in the Middle East. That redistribution itself creates temporary shortfalls elsewhere.

How the Stocks Ran Low

The immediate cause is the intensity of Iranian missile and drone attacks and the American and allied response. Defending against large salvos of ballistic missiles requires firing multiple interceptors for each incoming threat in many cases. Offensive campaigns have similarly burned through precision munitions at rates far above peacetime planning assumptions.

Yet the problem did not begin in February 2026. Transfers to Ukraine had already reduced stocks of Patriots and some ATACMS. Earlier operations against Houthi forces and support for Israel during previous rounds of Middle East fighting had further drawn down inventories. Production capacity, constrained by specialized components such as solid rocket motors, limited suppliers, and long manufacturing lead times, never fully recovered from those earlier demands.

CSIS analyses have noted that the United States entered the Iran conflict with inventories that were already tighter than ideal for a prolonged high-intensity fight. Once the shooting started, expenditure rates quickly outpaced the modest monthly deliveries of new missiles. In some periods the Pentagon was receiving only about 15 to 20 new Tomahawks or Patriot missiles per month under existing schedules, while combat use ran far higher.

Strategic Consequences

The depleted stocks create practical constraints. Commanders have at times chosen not to intercept every incoming projectile judged to pose limited risk, conserving the remaining interceptors for higher-priority threats. That calculus carries its own dangers. It also limits the ability to reinforce other theaters quickly if a crisis emerges elsewhere.

Analysts have been particularly concerned about the Western Pacific. A potential conflict with China would demand large numbers of the same long-range strike and air-defense missiles now in short supply. The current shortfall creates what some describe as a window of increased vulnerability until production can catch up. Similar concerns apply to defending European allies or responding to other contingencies.

The shortage has also complicated support for partners. Ukraine continues to request additional Patriot interceptors to counter Russian ballistic missiles. Israel has relied on US systems to augment its own defenses. With American stocks low, the capacity to provide further transfers is constrained.

Rebuilding Will Take Years

Officials acknowledge that replenishment is a multi-year project. CSIS estimates suggest it could take until mid-to-late 2029 to restore Patriot and THAAD inventories to pre-war levels under current delivery projections. Tomahawk recovery may stretch into 2030 or beyond. Even aggressive contracting and expanded funding will not erase the lag inherent in missile manufacturing.

The Pentagon has sought additional funding, including emergency requests that allocate billions for new interceptors and strike missiles. Contracts have been awarded to increase production of Patriot PAC-3 missiles and other systems. Longer-term goals include tripling or quadrupling output for certain interceptors. Industrial-base investments begun under previous administrations and accelerated more recently are intended to ease bottlenecks.

Yet experts caution that expanding capacity is not instantaneous. Solid rocket motors require specialized facilities and lengthy curing processes. Workforce training and supply-chain expansion take time. Even with higher budgets, the gap between wartime consumption and peacetime production rates remains wide.

Official Messaging and Public Debate

The administration has projected confidence. Pentagon spokespeople have stated that the US military remains the most powerful in the world and possesses what it needs to execute decisions at the time and place of the president’s choosing. President Trump has described American munitions holdings as massive and, in some comments, virtually unlimited for certain categories, while pointing to increased production and past underinvestment by previous administrations.

Independent analysts and some military voices have been more measured. They note that while enough munitions remain to continue current operations against Iran for a period of months, the margin is thinner than preferred and the opportunity cost for other theaters is real. The debate over how much risk the United States can accept while stocks rebuild has become part of the broader discussion of strategy in the Middle East and beyond.

The missile shortage is not an abstract accounting problem. It shapes operational decisions, limits options, and influences deterrence calculations. For as long as inventories remain depressed, the United States must carefully husband its remaining high-end munitions, accelerate production where possible, and weigh the costs of prolonged engagement against the risks of further depletion.

Production is increasing. Contracts are being written. The industrial base is receiving new investment. Those steps matter. But the timeline for meaningful recovery is measured in years, not months. In the meantime, the United States is operating with a leaner arsenal of some of its most important weapons than it possessed at the start of 2026. That reality will continue to influence American military posture until the factories catch up with the demands of the battlefield.
