AI or Hindi? Karnataka’s Classroom Experiment Forces Students to Choose Between Skills and Language

Karnataka has launched one of the most closely watched education experiments in recent years. From the 2026-27 academic year, Artificial Intelligence will be offered as a vocational subject in 1,642 government high schools. Students in Classes 9 and 10 can now choose AI instead of a third language under the National Skills Qualifications Framework. In the large majority of these schools, that third language has traditionally been Hindi. The decision has set off a sharp debate that goes far beyond classroom timetables. It touches the future of language teaching, the purpose of school education, and the long-running tension between skill-oriented learning and multilingualism in the state.

The numbers are significant. The Department of School Education and Literacy, through Samagra Shikshana Karnataka, is rolling out the programme across 1,180 newly approved high schools, 381 existing NSQF schools, and 81 single-sector schools. In the last category, AI will replace earlier vocational options such as beauty and wellness, retail, and apparel. Each school is expected to appoint one AI guest teacher on a monthly honorarium of ₹20,000. Candidates need degrees or diplomas in computer science, information technology, or related fields, along with at least one year of relevant experience and the ability to teach in both the local language and English. School Development and Monitoring Committees have been tasked with completing the recruitment process. Officials have also directed that third-language teachers from schools adopting AI should be redeployed to nearby government schools that face shortages.

The government presents the move as a practical response to changing employment realities. Karnataka has long argued that public school students, particularly those outside major cities, need early exposure to technologies that will shape the job market. AI is framed as a future-ready skill that builds problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical competence. Officials point out that the option to replace a third language with an NSQF vocational subject already existed. The new programme simply expands that choice and aligns it with one of the state’s education guarantees focused on skill development. In flagship institutions such as Karnataka Public Schools, demand for such courses is said to be strong.

Critics see a different picture. The Karnataka State High School Hindi Teachers’ Association has opposed the change, arguing that it weakens the three-language policy and threatens the livelihoods of language teachers. Their concern is not abstract. For years, NSQF vocational subjects have already been allowed in place of the third language in participating schools. This has quietly reduced the space for Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and other languages in many classrooms. The association has urged the government to retain the existing language framework rather than accelerate its dilution.

The AI experiment does not stand in isolation. It arrives against the backdrop of a broader shift in Karnataka’s language policy. The State Education Policy Commission had earlier recommended moving most schools to a two-language formula centred on Kannada and English, while retaining three languages only in linguistic minority institutions. More recently, the government replaced numerical marks with grades for the third-language paper in the SSLC examination and excluded it from the overall score. The total marks dropped from 625 to 525. Data showed that a large majority of the students who failed the third language were those studying Hindi. Supporters of the grading change described it as a relief from unnecessary academic pressure. Opponents viewed it as a deliberate step toward diminishing Hindi’s place in the curriculum.

The scale of Hindi’s dominance as the third language makes the debate particularly charged. In recent years, more than 90 per cent of state-board students have opted for Hindi. Failure rates in the subject have remained high, prompting Kannada organisations and the Kannada Development Authority to argue that the language had become a burden rather than an asset for many students. At the same time, groups concerned with national integration and multilingual competence have warned that reducing the weight of the third language could weaken students’ ability to engage across linguistic regions of India.

The introduction of AI intensifies these fault lines. On one side is the argument that government school students cannot afford to lag behind in a technology-driven economy. Early exposure to AI concepts, even at a foundational level, is presented as an equalising measure that private-school students already enjoy. On the other side is the fear that replacing language study with skills courses will erode multilingual competence, cultural understanding, and the professional base of language teachers. Hindi teachers note that functional proficiency in the language still opens opportunities across much of northern and central India. Language advocates more broadly argue that schools should not force students into an artificial choice between technology and linguistic ability.

There are practical questions that remain unanswered. The quality of instruction will depend heavily on the guest teachers who are recruited and the infrastructure available in rural and semi-urban schools. Many government high schools still struggle with basic digital facilities. Without reliable computers, connectivity, and sustained teacher training, the AI course risks becoming a token addition rather than a meaningful skill pathway. Redeployment of third-language teachers may ease shortages elsewhere, but it also signals that language teaching is being treated as more flexible, and therefore more dispensable, than core subjects.

National context adds further complexity. The National Education Policy 2020 has emphasised both multilingualism and the integration of vocational education. Different states have interpreted these priorities in different ways. Tamil Nadu has long resisted any perception of Hindi imposition and maintained a firm two-language approach. Other states continue to treat the three-language formula as a tool of national cohesion. Karnataka’s experiment sits somewhere in the middle: it does not abolish the third language entirely, but it makes it optional in a growing number of schools and pairs that option with a high-profile technology subject.

What India’s classrooms should prepare students for remains the central question. Proponents of the AI programme argue that the answer is clear: employability in an economy increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, data, and digital systems. Critics counter that education is not only about immediate job readiness. Languages shape thinking, cultural identity, and the ability to navigate a diverse country. Reducing the third language to an optional, lower-stakes subject, they say, risks producing students who are technically trained but linguistically narrower.

For now, the experiment is limited to selected government high schools and remains optional. Students who prefer to continue with a third language can still do so. The government maintains that language teaching will continue in lower classes and in flagship schools. Whether the model expands, and whether it delivers genuine skills rather than superficial exposure, will determine its long-term impact. The larger debate it has triggered is unlikely to fade. Karnataka has placed technology and language on opposite sides of a classroom choice. The results will reveal not only how students respond, but also how the state balances the competing demands of economic modernity and linguistic plurality.
