In the late 1970s, the sound of drums on popular records was changing. Gabriel immediately recognized the potential. He built the opening track of the album, “Intruder,” around the new sound. Collins was equally struck by the discovery. When he began work on his own debut solo album, Face Value, the following year, he reunited with Padgham and set out to refine the technique. The most famous result appeared on the song “In the Air Tonight.” For nearly four minutes the track remains sparse and unsettling. A Roland CR-78 drum machine ticks away with a mechanical pulse. Collins’ voice floats over atmospheric keyboards, building a quiet sense of dread. Then, with almost no warning, the full drum kit enters with a massive, gated fill that feels like a detonation. The sudden explosion of volume and power is one of the most memorable moments in 1980s popular music.
Collins has said the famous fill itself was largely improvised. He did not carefully plan a series of carefully chosen notes. He simply decided where the drums should enter and played what felt right in the moment. The power of the performance came as much from the sound as from the notes themselves. The gated reverb made every tom hit and snare crack feel larger than life, then cut them off cleanly so the next hit could land with equal force.
The technical principle behind the effect is straightforward once you understand it. Heavy compression reduces the dynamic range, bringing up the quiet room ambience and making the overall sound denser and more aggressive. A noise gate then monitors the signal and closes completely when the level falls below a chosen threshold. The result is reverb that appears only while the drum is sounding and vanishes the instant the hit is over. Engineers later learned to apply the same principle more deliberately, using ambient microphones placed farther from the kit, heavy compression, and carefully tuned gates. He has noted that the sound was interesting precisely because it moved from everything to nothing in a matter of milliseconds. The contrast created drama. On “In the Air Tonight,” that drama arrives after a long period of restraint, which is why the drum entrance still lands with such force decades later. The song has been used in films, television shows, and countless reaction videos. Its drum fill remains one of the most widely recognized in popular music, often imitated by air-drummers of every generation.

Yet the gated sound has never completely disappeared. It continues to surface whenever an artist wants a sudden jolt of power or a deliberate nod to the era that first made it famous. Digital plugins now make the effect easy to recreate, but the original discovery still carries a certain romance. It was not the product of careful research or a planned innovation. It was the result of a talkback microphone left open at the right moment, a compressor doing its job too aggressively, and a group of musicians and engineers who recognized magic when they heard it.
