In a dimly lit club in central Yerevan, hundreds of people gather under Pride flags for an underground drag show. Details of the event travel only by private Instagram stories and word of mouth. The address is shared late, security is tight, and the atmosphere mixes celebration with quiet vigilance. On quieter nights, around 250 people show up. On better ones, the crowd can exceed 450. Just a few years earlier, similar events drew only a few dozen people in NGO basements. The transformation is striking in a country that ILGA-Europe ranks among the most difficult places in Europe for LGBTQ+ people.
Armenia has a long record of hostility toward its queer community. In 2012, the DIY queer club in Yerevan was firebombed after its owner appeared at a Pride event abroad. She later fled the country. In 2018, a mob attacked LGBTQ activists in the village of Shurnukh. In 2023, a transgender woman was murdered in her home and the apartment set on fire. Family rejection remains common, and public expressions of queerness often invite harassment or worse. Drag itself is not illegal, yet venues that host it have faced repeated police pressure, often under the pretext of drug searches or noise complaints.
Against this backdrop, the modern drag scene was effectively dormant for years. Many queer Armenians who wanted to perform left the country. Those who stayed largely kept their art private or limited it to small, carefully controlled events. That began to change in December 2022. At a party marking the 15th anniversary of Pink Armenia, the country’s main LGBTQ rights organization, a group of performers including Gigi Aries took the stage. The night is widely remembered as a turning point. “It created a magic,” Gigi later said. “It’s like there was something inside of us waiting to be unleashed.”
From that point, local artists began building structure. Weekly practice sessions appeared at community centers. Drag houses formed, offering mentorship in the classic tradition of drag families with “mothers” and “daughters.” Performers such as Leona Love, Lady Die, Frigid Bardo, Sirena Soul, and others emerged. They started incorporating Armenian cultural references into their acts—folk and classic pop songs, the traditional dhol drum, dances inspired by the film The Color of Pomegranates, and even pieces that touch on the Armenian Genocide or historic speeches by local activists. The result feels rooted rather than imported. For many of the artists, the work carries a dual purpose: entertainment and a quiet assertion that one can be both Armenian and queer.
The biggest external push came from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Hundreds of thousands of Russians left their country in the following months and years. Estimates of those who settled in Armenia vary, but tens of thousands remained for extended periods, drawn by visa-free entry through the Eurasian Economic Union and relative geographic closeness. Among them were significant numbers of queer people fleeing Russia’s increasingly harsh anti-LGBT laws, including the designation of the so-called “international LGBT movement” as extremist.
Russian arrivals changed the landscape in two practical ways. First, they brought an experienced audience and skilled performers. Molly Tok, a Russian drag queen, fled after police raided the bar where she worked. Guards had been wearing bulletproof vests in anticipation of the crackdown. In Yerevan she established her own drag house and began mentoring younger Armenian artists. Second, the visible presence of foreigners with dyed hair, tattoos, piercings, and gender-nonconforming clothing softened some everyday social reactions. What once read immediately as “Armenian and shameful” could sometimes be dismissed as foreign eccentricity. One organizer put it bluntly: it is more acceptable if a Russian does it; an Armenian doing the same is seen as bringing shame to the nation. The distinction is imperfect and often unfair, yet it created breathing room.
Leo, a central organizer often described as a mother of the local scene, has watched the change closely. First introduced to drag through Pink Armenia roughly a decade earlier, he remembers the 2012 firebombing pushing him back into the closet. “It scared me back into the closet… real fucking bad,” he has said. “When you hear about a queer place being bombed… then you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’m never coming out. Cause then they will kill me.’” The recent growth has shifted his view of the community’s status. “We are truly… being looked at in the community as stars… we are respected, and we demand respect now,” he said. “People love us.”
The risks have not vanished. The Portal bar, which opened in late 2023 and hosted queer events, closed within months after neighbors reported a drag performer in high heels and police conducted a raid. Its owner later left Armenia. Rents in Yerevan rose sharply after the Russian influx—sometimes three or four times higher—pushing many young queer people back into family homes. Pink Armenia recorded a clear rise in domestic violence cases linked to this pressure: 10 in 2022, 22 in 2023, and 38 in 2024, figures activists believe understate the true scale. At one mid-June 2026 Pride-related drag show, the evening ended early after a performer fainted and organizers feared police would arrive with the ambulance. Outside, threats and harassment still occur.
Yet the numbers keep growing. New queens appear each year. Shows that once needed NGO funding now fill commercial venues through ticket sales and community support. The performances remain deliberately underground because open advertising would invite trouble, but the scale has changed the internal feeling of the scene. Drag in Armenia is openly political in a way it often is not in safer countries. “Drag is more political in Armenia because, honestly, we have to be,” Leo has said. “It’s all about survival, and it’s all just about living—surviving, but also thriving.”
The story is not one of sudden acceptance. Armenia remains a difficult place for LGBTQ people, and the gains are fragile. Police can still shut events down. Families can still reject. Economic pressures can still force people into unsafe living situations. What has changed is the existence of a visible, organized, and increasingly confident subculture that insists on taking space anyway. In a country where visibility once meant near-certain danger, the ability to pack rooms with hundreds of people and mentor a new generation of performers counts as hard-won progress.
The underground drag scene thrives because local artists refused to wait for perfect conditions. They used the unexpected demographic opening created by the war in Ukraine, built institutions of mutual support, and turned performance into both joy and resistance. In Yerevan’s secret clubs, under the careful watch of organizers who know the risks, Armenia’s drag queens keep proving that survival and thriving can occupy the same stage.
