How Akash Became the World’s Most Wanted Air-Defence System
Akash did not become a global talking point because a brochure said so. It became one after a four-day shooting war in May 2025, a Western interceptor shortage, and a price that mid-sized militaries can actually pay. The missile itself is older than that moment. What changed is the market.
For years Akash was treated as a respectable but late Indian programme: indigenous, useful, and slightly behind the curve. Then Pakistan answered India’s Operation Sindoor with swarms of drones, loitering munitions and rockets. India’s layered shield held. Officials put the home-grown battery at the centre of that story. Friendly governments that had only kicked tyres at defence expos started asking for delivery schedules.
A forty-year project that almost stayed in the lab
Akash — Sanskrit for “sky” — began as one of five missiles in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, launched in 1983 under A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The brief was strategic rather than fashionable. India could not keep buying air defence from abroad if its neighbours were modernising their air forces. Dependence was expensive. In a crisis it could also be withheld.
Building a medium-range surface-to-air system is not the same as building a rocket. The battery needs a radar that can track many targets at once, a command link that survives jamming, a missile that can pull high-g turns in the endgame, and vehicles that can fire and move. Prahlada Ramarao, who led the effort as a young scientist at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad, later recalled the services’ demand: if the enemy sent six or eight aircraft, the system had to handle them together, not one at a time. About a thousand scientists across a dozen laboratories worked the problem. First flight tests came in 1990. User induction arrived only in 2014 for the Air Force and 2015 for the Army.
That long gestation is why older commentary filed Akash under “indigenous success, delayed.” Combat reopened the file.
What a battery actually does
A typical Akash firing unit is a mobile package: Rajendra 3D phased-array fire-control radar, surveillance radars, command-and-control vehicles, and launchers carrying three ready missiles each. The Air Force mounts the kit on wheeled trucks; the Army uses tracked chassis so batteries can stay with formations. The missile is about 5.8 metres long and weighs roughly 720 kilograms. It carries a 60-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead with a proximity fuze.
The original missile uses a solid booster and then a ramjet, flying at about Mach 2.5. The practical envelope is roughly 25–30 kilometres, with altitude coverage up to about 18 kilometres. Guidance is command-to-line-of-sight from the battery radar. Later variants add an indigenous active radio-frequency seeker. Older official figures often cite the ability to track dozens of targets — sometimes up to 64 — and to engage several at once. Claimed single-shot kill probability is about 88 percent, rising toward 99 percent in salvo. DRDO puts indigenous content around 96 percent. Bharat Dynamics Limited builds the missile; Bharat Electronics Limited builds the radars and command systems; more than 250 Indian firms feed the chain.
That last point is not industrial patriotism. It is an export argument. There is no third-country licence veto on the core kit.
The family has split. Akash-1S adds the seeker and is the variant Armenia bought. Akash Prime is tuned for high altitude and thin air; the Army has trialled it above 15,000 feet in eastern Ladakh. Akash-NG is a redesign rather than a facelift: dual-pulse solid motor instead of the old ramjet, canisterised launch, smaller ground footprint, active seeker, and a claimed engagement envelope stretching toward 50–80 kilometres depending on target and profile. User evaluation trials finished in December 2025. The new missile is meant for saturation attacks and low-radar-cross-section drones, not only classic fighters.
Operation Sindoor: the brochure became wreckage
On 7 May 2025 India struck terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan answered with a cheap-and-many raid against some fifteen Indian military sites from Awantipora in Kashmir to Bhuj in Gujarat. The mix included Turkish-origin Yiha and Songar-type unmanned aircraft, Chinese-origin munitions — Indian briefers later displayed PL-15 debris — and short-range rockets. Indian accounts spoke of hundreds of drones over several nights.
Akash did not fight alone. The shield was layered: S-400 and Barak-8/MR-SAM further out, Akash in the inner-medium belt, guns and counter-drone systems closer in, all tied through the Air Force’s Integrated Air Command and Control System and the Army’s Akashteer automated air-defence network. Officials called Akash’s performance “stellar.” It engaged multiple targets in group and autonomous modes, including low-altitude drones and kamikaze unmanned aircraft. Air Marshal A.K. Bharti publicly credited the indigenous system. Prahlada Ramarao said watching it kill live targets was the happiest day of his life.
One later analysis attributed five Pakistani fighter kills across the operation to Akash. That figure should be treated as an Indian claim, not independently audited scorekeeping. What is not in serious dispute is that the grid stopped a large saturation raid from landing a strategic blow, and that Indian officers put Akash at the centre of the story. Combat proof is the difference between “interested” and “send a technical team.”
Why the queue formed
Three market facts collided.
Western magazines are empty. Patriot batteries and PAC-3 interceptors have been consumed in Ukraine and, in 2026 commentary, further drawn down in a United States–Iran war. Ukraine still wants more Patriots. Washington is restocking. Lead times for a high-end Western battery are long and the unit cost is high. Indian comparisons that put an Akash interceptor near half a million dollars against several million for a PAC-3 are promotional, and the two missiles are not the same class — Patriot reaches much farther. The cost-per-shot argument is still real for countries that need volume against drones rather than a thin high-end umbrella.
The threat changed. Drone swarms and cheap cruise or loitering munitions punish expensive interceptors. A system that can track many tracks, fire several missiles, move, and be replenished from a domestic factory is more useful than a handful of exquisite rounds. Akash was designed in the 1980s for multi-aircraft raids. That architecture aged better than expected.
India will sell the whole battery: radar, launchers, missiles, training, and no American or Russian end-use choke point. Armenia signed first, a deal reported around $720 million, or about ₹6,000 crore, for fifteen Akash-1S systems. The first battery arrived in November 2024. India has also confirmed exports toward Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. After Sindoor, reports named fresh interest from three more countries, plus a longer list that has included the Philippines, Vietnam, Egypt and Brazil. Armenia has already been briefed on Akash-NG.
Akash is India’s second major missile export after BrahMos. It is not “the world’s most wanted air-defence system” in the sense that it displaced Patriot, S-400 or David’s Sling. It is the most wanted affordable, available, combat-proven medium-range package in a market that suddenly has too few of those.
What comes next
Domestic demand has not peaked. The Army has continued to raise Akash regiments. A large Akash-NG buy — figures around a thousand missiles have been discussed — sits alongside a much bigger QRSAM programme, now called Anant Shastra, as India thickens the inner rings of a national shield sometimes branded Sudarshan Chakra. The Ministry of Defence has opened DRDO conventional-missile technology, including Akash, to qualified private firms so production is not stuck on a single public-sector line. Wikipedia-scale production figures already put tens of thousands of missiles built by 2025. Export orders would keep those lines warm after Indian inventories fill.
The honest limit is range and role. Akash will not replace a 150–400 kilometre outer layer. India is building that separately with S-400, the forthcoming Kusha family and ballistic-missile defence. Buyers who need to stop fighter-bombers and drone raids over airbases, cities and brigades are the customers in the queue.
That is the real story. A slow indigenous SAM, written off for years as late and limited, used a drone-and-missile night in May 2025 — and a global shortage of expensive interceptors — to become an export product. The world did not suddenly discover Indian engineering. It discovered that a battery which already existed, could be built at home, and had just been shot in anger was for sale.
