Lionel Messi has brought his Argentina career to a close. On Monday, 31 August 2026, the 39-year-old posted a handwritten statement on Instagram confirming he will no longer play for the national team, ending more than two decades in the albiceleste shirt. The decision had been made weeks earlier. He wrote the words on 21 July, two days after Argentina’s extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, and held them back while his father, Jorge Messi, was dying. Jorge died on 8 August in Rosario, aged 68. After that, Messi said, he was even more certain.
“It was a decision that hurt – and still hurts – deep in my soul, but I realise that the time has come,” he wrote. “I swear to you that I always gave my all – not just in recent years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought hard and gave my all for this shirt, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”
He added that chapters were closing, that he had emptied himself, and that younger players now deserved the place he had occupied for so long. “I’ve given my all; I’ve nothing left to give.”
That is the official end of one of the most complete international careers the game has seen. Messi leaves as Argentina’s most-capped player and all-time leading scorer, with 207 appearances and 125 goals since his debut against Hungary on 17 August 2005. His last match was the World Cup final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey: Spain 1-0 after extra time, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. Argentina were reduced to ten men late in normal time when Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card. Messi’s influence that night was limited. Spain controlled the ball; Argentina barely created a chance until extra time. He left the pitch in tears.
The farewell is not only about one final. It is about the long arc that made the last five years feel inevitable only after they had already happened.
For most of his international life, Messi was defined by what he had not won. He lost the 2007 Copa América final, the 2014 World Cup final to Germany, and Copa América finals in 2015 and 2016. After the 2016 shootout defeat to Chile in the Copa América Centenario at the same MetLife Stadium that hosted this summer’s final, he said the national team was over. He was 29. “I’ve done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion.” Within months he reversed the decision. What followed was the period that rewrote his story with Argentina.
Under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and then the World Cup in Qatar. Messi was player of the tournament in 2022 and scored twice in the final against France. They won Copa América again in 2024. A generation that had grown up watching him lose finals suddenly watched him lift every major trophy available to him. The 2026 World Cup was an attempt to go further still: back-to-back world titles, something no nation had done since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Spain ended that bid. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, and with 21 World Cup goals in his career, one behind Kylian Mbappé’s new record. He also became only the second man, after Brazil’s Cafu, to play in three World Cup finals.
The delay in announcing retirement was personal as much as sporting. Jorge Messi had been his father, agent, and constant presence from the first move to Barcelona as a boy. After Jorge’s death, Messi had already spoken of doubts about how much longer he could keep playing. In the retirement note he thanked his family for walking with him through “this beautiful yet difficult journey,” and thanked coaches, teammates and officials for memories he said he would keep. He told supporters he would miss hearing them from inside the pitch, and that he would now stand with them on the outside, “through thick and thin – especially the tough times.”
He will continue at club level with Inter Miami, where his contract runs to 2028. International football, though, is finished. There will be no 2028 Copa América as a player and no late tilt at 2030. That door is closed in his own words, not by a federation statement or a coach’s hint.
The contrast with 2016 matters. Then, retirement was a wound speaking. This time it is a man who has already won the thing he once thought he would never win, and who no longer believes his body can give the shirt what the shirt still asks. After the final he had written that his legs could not go on, that he had tried to push past his physical limits and could not. Six weeks later he made that private assessment public.
Argentina now move into a post-Messi era that Scaloni and the squad have been circling since July. The coach had refused to speak for his captain after the final and said only that Messi would stop when Messi chose to stop. That choice has now been made. The next generation Messi pointed to in his letter – the players he said “deserve their place” – inherit a team that is no longer defined by drought. They also inherit the weight of replacing the player who ended it.
What remains is the record and the feeling around it. Twenty-one years, six World Cups, three World Cup finals, two Copa América titles, a Finalissima, Olympic gold from 2008, and the 2022 World Cup that changed how Argentina remembers him. The early years of almosts are part of the same story as the later years of trophies. He insisted on that in the statement: he gave everything before the winning years, not only during them.
He signed off the way Argentine footballers often do when they have nothing left to add.
Thank you, God, for making me Argentine.
Come on, Argentina.
