How to Update Your Aadhaar Address from Home Using the Official App for ₹75

Shifting homes used to mean another trip to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, a token, a wait, and a stack of photocopies. That is no longer the only option. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) now lets residents update the address on their Aadhaar through the official Aadhaar App for a fee of ₹75, using face authentication and either their own proof of address or a family member’s Aadhaar.

The facility is part of the newer Aadhaar App, also referred to as Pehchaan, which UIDAI has been rolling out as the replacement for the older mAadhaar app. The idea is simple: complete a demographic address change from a smartphone instead of standing in a centre queue. The request still goes through official verification. It is not instant. But for people who already have a valid address proof and a working camera phone, the process is now largely digital.

This matters because Aadhaar address is used across banking, SIM KYC, government schemes, property paperwork and tenancy records. An outdated address can delay a loan, a new connection, or a benefit transfer. UIDAI also does not cap how many times you can change your address. If you move again, you can apply again.

What the ₹75 fee actually covers

UIDAI’s published update charges treat a standalone demographic change — name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email, or a combination of those fields — as a paid service when it is not bundled with a biometric update. The current charge is ₹75, inclusive of taxes. That is the fee users pay inside the app after face authentication.

It is important not to confuse this with another UIDAI facility. Uploading Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents on the myAadhaar portal remains free until 14 June 2027. That is a document-update window, not the same thing as submitting a demographic address change through the app. Document update at a physical centre still costs ₹75. Biometric updates have a separate rate, generally ₹125 except in specified age windows where they are free.

So if your only goal is to change the printed address on Aadhaar using the app, budget ₹75 and keep the acknowledgement number. Do not pay extra “handling charges” to an agent. UIDAI has repeatedly said centres and intermediaries should not collect more than the notified fee.

What you need before opening the app

The process fails most often because people start without the right document or with the wrong app. Download only the official Aadhaar App from Google Play, the App Store, or UIDAI’s own download page at pehchaan.uidai.gov.in. Look for the official listing rather than similarly named third-party apps.

You will also need:

• Your 12-digit Aadhaar number
• Access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, or the ability to receive an OTP on that number if you onboarded the app on a different SIM
• A six-digit app PIN, or face/biometric login already set up
• A clear scan or photo of a valid Proof of Address in your name, unless you are using the Head of Family route
• A payment method for ₹75
• Biometric lock disabled on Aadhaar if the app asks for it before face authentication

The document should be readable. Blurry photos, cropped edges, black-and-white scans and files that hide the name or address are common reasons for rejection. Utility bills should generally be recent, typically not older than three months. The name on the document should match the Aadhaar holder unless you are borrowing a family member’s address through the Head of Family process.

Two ways to update address in the app

The Aadhaar App offers two paths.

The first is document-based. You upload your own accepted proof, type the new address, preview it in English and the regional language, complete face authentication and pay.

The second is Head of Family based. This is useful for spouses, children or other immediate family members who live at the same address but do not have a utility bill or rent paper in their own name. You enter the family member’s Aadhaar number, declare the relationship, pay ₹75, and the request goes to that person for approval in their own app. Their Aadhaar must be active. After they approve, UIDAI processes the change. Official UIDAI explainers also note that the Head of Family route is the way to retain a C/O field if you want one, because UIDAI’s newer policy no longer shows C/O on Aadhaar by default after a regular document-based update.

Name, gender and date of birth still generally cannot be changed inside the app. Those updates usually require a centre visit. Email update through the app has had separate, time-bound fee waivers; address update has not been advertised as free.

Step-by-step: update using your own documents

Open the official Aadhaar App and log in with your PIN or face authentication. From the home or services section, tap Address Update and choose the option to update using your documents. Read the on-screen note about the fee and the expected processing time. Official explainers and news reports put that window around 15 days, while some UIDAI-linked explainers mention up to 30 days. Treat two to four weeks as a realistic range.

Select the document type from the list shown in the app. Upload a clear copy of the original. Enter every address field carefully — house or flat number, street, locality, city, district, state and PIN code. Check the preview in both English and the regional language before you continue. Tick the declarations.

Then complete face authentication. Follow the camera prompts, including blinking if asked. After a successful match, the app moves to payment. Pay ₹75 and submit. Download the acknowledgement slip immediately and save the Service Request Number (SRN). That number is what you will use to track the request.

Step-by-step: update through Head of Family

Choose the family-member option under Address Update. If the phone number used to open the app is not the one linked to Aadhaar, enter the OTP sent to the registered number. Fill in the family member’s Aadhaar number and relationship, accept the self-declaration, complete face authentication and pay ₹75.

The Head of Family then opens their Aadhaar App, goes to the family member request section, enters the SRN, reviews the new address in English and the regional language, and approves it. Until that approval happens, the request stays pending.

Documents that usually work

UIDAI maintains an official schedule of supporting documents for enrolment and update. Common proofs of address include a valid Indian passport, voter ID or e-voter ID, driving licence, ration or e-ration card, recent electricity, water, gas or telecom bills, bank or post office passbook or statement, property tax receipt, registered sale or gift deed, and a registered rent or lease agreement. Some government allotment letters and specified official certificates are also accepted.

Unregistered rent agreements are a frequent rejection point. If you are a tenant and the landlord will not register the agreement, use another accepted paper in your name — a recent bank statement, a utility bill, or voter ID updated to the new address — or use the Head of Family route if someone in the household already has the correct Aadhaar address.

Always confirm the current list on uidai.gov.in before you upload. Rules and accepted formats have been revised in 2026, and a document that worked last year is not automatically safe this year.

After you submit

Keep the SRN. Track the request inside the Aadhaar App. Once the update is approved, download a fresh e-Aadhaar. Banks, telecom operators and government portals may take additional time to pick up the new address through their own KYC systems, so do not assume every institution will see the change the same day Aadhaar is updated.

If the request is rejected, the usual causes are an unclear scan, an address that does not match the document text, an unaccepted document type, a name mismatch, or a failed face match. Correct the problem and apply again. There is no official cap on address updates, but repeating a sloppy upload only wastes another ₹75.

Practical cautions

Use only official channels: the Aadhaar App, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and uidai.gov.in. Call 1947 for help. Do not share your Aadhaar OTP, app PIN or face-auth screen with anyone offering to “do it for you.” Do not install lookalike apps. Do not send documents over WhatsApp to unknown operators.

If you only need to place a supporting document on record and are not in a hurry to change the demographic address field through the app, check whether the free myAadhaar document-upload window until June 2027 meets your purpose. If you need the address on Aadhaar itself changed from your phone, the in-app route and the ₹75 fee are the current official path.

The policy is designed for convenience, not shortcuts. A clean document, a correct address preview and a successful face match still decide whether the update goes through.
