Why New Cars No Longer Come With a Spare Wheel
For decades, a spare wheel was as basic as a steering wheel. Lift the boot floor of almost any car and you found a fifth tyre, a jack and a wheel brace. That extra wheel was insurance against a puncture on a dark highway or a Sunday when every workshop was shut. Today, a growing number of new cars arrive without it. In its place sit a bottle of sealant, a small compressor, or nothing at all.
The change feels sudden only because most drivers notice it after they already own the car. It is not an accident. It is the result of regulation, engineering pressure, cost-cutting and a bet that most owners will never need a spare.
How common the missing spare has become
The spare has been shrinking for years. First came compact “space-saver” or doughnut tyres that were lighter and smaller than a full-size wheel. Then came run-flat tyres. Then puncture-repair kits. Now many models skip all of those options.
AAA has reported that roughly 30 percent of new cars now come with no spare of any kind, up from about 5 percent in 2006. Consumer Reports, looking at vehicles it has tested since 2020, found that only about 9 percent arrived with a full-size spare. Around 46 percent still had a temporary space-saver. The rest relied on sealant kits, run-flats, or no backup at all. In other words, close to half the new cars in that sample had no spare wheel you could actually bolt on.
The pattern is not limited to cheap hatchbacks. It appears across sedans, crossovers, hybrids and electric cars.
India made the spare optional in 2020
In India the shift has a clear legal starting point. In July 2020 the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Passenger cars in the M1 category — vehicles with up to eight seats besides the driver — manufactured after 1 October 2020 no longer have to carry a spare wheel if they have three things: tubeless tyres, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and a tyre repair kit.
The official explanation for the kit is simple: sealant poured into the tyre with compressed air is meant to close a puncture in the tread so the car can be driven to a workshop. The rule aligned India with practices already common in Europe and gave manufacturers room to use the old spare-well for batteries, extra cargo space or other hardware.
That is why models such as the Tata Tiago EV and Punch EV, certain Maruti Suzuki variants including the Victoris and some Grand Vitara and Fronx versions, and several hybrids and EVs now ship with a kit instead of a stepney. Other brands still fit a spare as standard on many petrol and diesel models. The spare has not vanished from the market. It has become a packaging choice rather than a legal requirement.
Weight is the biggest engineering reason
A full-size spare, jack and tools typically add 13 to 27 kilograms. That is dead weight for the life of the car if the tyre is never used. Carmakers are under constant pressure to improve fuel economy and cut carbon dioxide. In official tests every kilogram counts. Removing the spare is one of the cheapest ways to shave mass without redesigning the engine or body.
The same logic is stronger for electric cars. Extra weight shortens range. Battery packs already make EVs heavier than equivalent petrol cars, so engineers look for anything they can delete. The space under the boot floor is also prime real estate for battery modules on “skateboard” platforms. Once that cavity is filled, there is nowhere left for a fifth wheel.
Hybrids face a double squeeze: they need room for both an engine and a battery. Something has to give, and the spare is an easy candidate.
Cost and assembly time add up
A spare is not free. The manufacturer pays for a wheel, a tyre, a jack, a wrench, mounting hardware and the labour to install them. Estimates put the saving at roughly $100 to $300 per vehicle, or a more modest but still meaningful amount in rupees when the kit replaces a full-size alloy spare. Multiplied across hundreds of thousands of cars, the figure becomes serious money. Those savings rarely appear as a lower sticker price. They usually stay with the company.
There is also a quieter commercial point. Many buyers never use the spare during the first ownership cycle. From the factory’s point of view, they have been paying to ship and fit a part that sits unused.
Space inside the car has become more valuable
Modern cars are packed. Extra crash structure, airbags, electronics, exhaust after-treatment, infotainment and driver-assistance hardware all compete for room. In compact crossovers, raising the boot floor to hide a full-size spare cuts cargo volume that brochures then have to defend. Deleting the spare lets designers keep a flatter load floor or hide a battery pack without shrinking the cabin.
Some luxury brands long ago chose run-flat tyres partly for this reason. The tyre can be driven a limited distance after losing air, so there is no need to store a fifth wheel.
Most drivers never use the spare
Automakers also cite usage data. Industry figures show that the large majority of owners never change a tyre themselves during typical ownership. Punctures still happen — AAA has recorded millions of flat-tyre assistance calls in a single year — but many of those calls now go to a tow truck or a technician with a kit rather than to a driver jacking the car on the roadside.
TPMS is part of the argument. Sensors warn of falling pressure before the tyre is completely flat, which can give the driver time to reach a workshop. That does not prevent a sudden blowout or a large sidewall tear. It does reduce the number of slow leaks that used to leave people stranded with no warning.
What you get instead of a spare
The replacements fall into a few groups.
A compact space-saver is still a real spare, just smaller and speed-limited, often to around 80 km/h and a few dozen kilometres. It is lighter and cheaper to package than a matching full-size wheel.
Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that can support the car after a puncture for a limited distance, typically 50 to 80 km at reduced speed. They are common on some premium brands. They ride more firmly, cost more to replace, and still need to be changed after a serious puncture.
A mobility or repair kit is a bottle of sealant plus a 12-volt compressor. For a small hole in the tread it can be enough to get you to a tyre shop. It will not fix a sliced sidewall, a large tear, or a tyre that has come off the rim. Once sealant is used, the tyre often has to be replaced rather than repaired, and the kit itself is a one-shot or limited-use item.
Self-sealing tyres have an inner lining that can close small punctures. They reduce the chance of a flat but do not cover every kind of damage.
None of these is a full substitute for a matching fifth wheel on a remote road at night.
The practical limits buyers should know
Repair kits fail on the kinds of damage that are common on Indian roads: sharp construction debris, deep pothole impacts, and sidewall cuts. A space-saver may not fit if the car has large brakes. Run-flats can leave you with an expensive replacement and a harsh ride in the meantime. Roadside assistance helps in cities and on major highways. It is slower, or unavailable, on ghat roads, late at night, or in heavy rain.
That is why some owners still buy an aftermarket spare and jack. The kit has to match the car’s wheel size, bolt pattern and jacking points. A random spare from a scrapyard can be unsafe.
Off-road and long-distance vehicles are the exception. Models aimed at rough use — certain Subaru Wilderness versions, Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser and similar SUVs — often keep a full-size spare because their buyers treat it as essential equipment, not dead weight.
What to check before you buy
Look under the boot floor before you sign. Ask whether a spare is standard, optional, or unavailable. Read what the repair kit is actually rated to fix. Confirm that the car has TPMS and that you know how the warning light behaves. If you regularly drive long distances away from towns, treat a factory kit as a short-term patch, not a complete plan.
The spare wheel did not disappear because punctures vanished. It disappeared because manufacturers found it cheaper, lighter and easier to package a bottle of sealant than a fifth tyre — and because the law in India and many other markets now allows them to do so. For city commuters the trade-off may be acceptable. For anyone who still thinks of a car as a machine that should get you home after one bad nail, the missing stepney is a feature worth noticing before the first flat, not after.
