NEW SHILLONG — In a major step toward realizing Meghalaya’s ambitious vision of becoming a regional powerhouse for sports and youth development, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Wailadmiki Shylla, conducted an extensive, hands-on site inspection of the ongoing construction at the Mawkhanu Football Stadium in New Shillong. Accompanied by senior officials from the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, principal project architects, structural engineers, and key stakeholders, the Minister evaluated the overall progress, technical milestones, and structural quality of what is slated to become one of Northeast India’s most modern and expansive sporting venues.

During his visit, Minister Shylla walked through various construction sectors, examining structural foundations, earthworks, drainage routing, and early framework installations. Engaging directly with the on-site engineering team, he reviewed detailed architectural blueprints and progress reports to ensure that every phase of construction aligns strictly with high-grade engineering practices and project timelines. Expressing satisfaction with the current pace of work and the dedication displayed by the project execution teams, Minister Shylla voiced strong optimism that the mega-infrastructure project remains firmly on track to meet its targeted completion window in the latter half of 2028.

The inspection underscores the state government’s active, hands-on oversight approach to major infrastructure projects designed to upgrade Meghalaya’s public sector capabilities, enhance sports infrastructure, and foster talent development across the region.

A FIFA-Standard Sporting Landmark for the Region

The Mawkhanu Football Stadium represents a cornerstone initiative under the state government’s broader infrastructure push. Football has long been deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Meghalaya and the broader Northeast, producing top-tier national talent despite historically facing a shortage of world-class training and match infrastructure. The construction of the Mawkhanu complex directly addresses this gap, promising a facility built to the exact governing standards set by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Once operational, the stadium will boast a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators, making it one of the largest dedicated football venues in the entire region. The seating architecture is designed to offer unobstructed sightlines from every angle, creating an intimate yet roaring atmosphere for international fixtures, national tournaments like the Hero ISL and Durand Cup, and regional championships. At its core, the venue will feature a high-performance natural-grass playing pitch, integrated with modern sub-surface drainage and soil-aeration systems engineered to withstand Meghalaya’s heavy monsoon seasons without waterlogging.

Beyond match-day utility, the stadium is built to handle modern broadcast standards, featuring high-definition floodlighting systems, media commentary booths, multi-angle camera gantries, and dedicated press conference arenas equipped with high-speed communications infrastructure.

Financial Commitment and Strategic Location

Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹732 crore, fully funded by the Government of Meghalaya, the project stands as one of the single largest public investments in sporting infrastructure in the state’s history. This financial commitment reflects a strategic intent not merely to build a sports field, but to establish a multi-purpose economic hub that generates employment, boosts tourism, and stimulates local enterprise in New Shillong and surrounding villages.

Situated in Mawkhanu village, approximately 30 kilometers from central Shillong, the venue has been positioned within the planned township expansion of New Shillong. This location was deliberately chosen to alleviate urban congestion in central Shillong while anchoring future commercial and residential growth in the expanding metropolitan perimeter. The site benefits from ongoing arterial road widening projects and improved connectivity networks designed to ensure seamless traffic flow during high-capacity events.

Comprehensive Multi-Sport and Elite Training Ecosystem

While the 40,000-seat bowl serves as the central focal point, the Mawkhanu project is envisioned as a holistic sports ecosystem rather than a single-use stadium. Recognizing the need for sustainable talent development, the state government has designed the complex as a comprehensive multi-sport hub capable of nurturing athletes across various disciplines.

A key highlight of the development is a state-of-the-art football academy, which will be operated in partnership with NorthEast United FC. This high-performance academy will feature dedicated training grounds, rehabilitation units, sports science facilities, and residential quarters designed to identify, recruit, and train promising young athletes from Meghalaya and across the Northeast under professional coaching guidance.

In addition to football facilities, the sprawling complex includes:

• State-of-the-Art Shooting Range: Built to meet national competition standards, providing specialized training facilities for target shooting disciplines.
• Aquatic and Indoor Sports Complex: Featuring an Olympic-spec swimming pool alongside dedicated courts for tennis and squash.
• Fitness and Conditioning Centers: Modern gymnasiums equipped with biomechanical assessment gear, strength conditioning zones, and recovery suites.
• Community and Hospitality Infrastructure: A clubhouse, dining and catering facilities, administrative quarters, and expansive public open spaces designed to host civic gatherings and family recreation.

Empowering Youth and Driving Regional Growth

Speaking to media personnel following the detailed walkthrough, Minister Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized that the project represents much more than physical concrete and steel. He framed the stadium as a transformative investment in the youth of Meghalaya, providing them with access to elite facilities that were previously out of reach locally.

“Our goal is to ensure that our young athletes no longer have to leave the state to find world-class training facilities or exposure to top-tier competition,” Shylla noted during the site visit. “The Mawkhanu Football Stadium will place Meghalaya on the international sporting map. It will serve as a training ground for future champions and a source of community pride for generations to come.”

The project is also anticipated to deliver significant economic dividends. Large-scale sporting events, regional leagues, and national competitions are projected to drive sports tourism, benefiting local hospitality sectors, transport operators, and small business owners throughout East Khasi Hills.

As construction progresses towards the 2028 completion target, regular monitoring visits by government officials will continue to ensure strict adherence to safety standards, quality control benchmarks, and financial oversight. With foundation works making steady headway, the Mawkhanu Football Stadium is rapidly moving from a visionary masterplan toward becoming a reality for Meghalaya.
