How PhonePe’s Global Visa Partnership Signals Its Evolution into a Financial Super-App

Digital payments in India have long been synonymous with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). By enabling instant, fee-free bank-to-bank transfers via a simple scan of a QR code, UPI reshaped how a billion people handle daily transactions. At the forefront of this revolution was PhonePe, which captured the lion’s share of domestic UPI market volume. However, relying purely on domestic peer-to-peer transfers presents clear limitations: domestic transactions yield low-to-zero merchant discount rates (MDR), and international usability has historically been restricted.

To overcome these boundaries, PhonePe partnered with Visa at the Global Fintech Fest. This collaboration marks a critical strategic shift, taking PhonePe’s domestic payment architecture global while integrating Visa’s credit and debit rails directly into its ecosystem. Beyond merely expanding geographic reach, this partnership highlights a larger transformation: PhonePe is no longer just a payments utility, but a full-stack financial services power player and consumer technology platform.

PhonePe Takes Visa Payments Global

For years, Indian travelers heading abroad faced a familiar set of friction points: high currency conversion fees, foreign transaction markups on credit cards, and the hassle of carrying foreign currency. While the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) made strides with UPI International, its reach remained dependent on individual bilateral agreements between countries and foreign banks.

By integrating directly with Visa’s established global network, PhonePe bypassed these infrastructure bottlenecks, bringing four primary cross-border and card-based capabilities to its users and merchant network.

1. Cross-Border Scan to Pay

PhonePe integrated Visa’s QR ecosystem directly into its mobile application. This allows Indian travelers visiting participating international markets—including popular Asian hubs like Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, and South Korea—to pay international merchants using their PhonePe app. Users simply scan local Visa-supported QR codes at retail stores, restaurants, or transit hubs. The transaction converts currency seamlessly behind the scenes, eliminating the need to buy forex cards or carry cash.

2. Tokenized Tap to Pay

Leveraging Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, PhonePe enabled a contactless “Tap to Pay” feature for Android users. Customers can store tokenized versions of their credit or debit Visa cards within the app. At physical stores anywhere in the world, users can pay by tapping their smartphone against any contactless point-of-sale (POS) terminal. This feature works even in low-connectivity environments, ensuring that transaction success rates remain high when traveling.

3. Smart Accept for Micro-Merchants

The partnership addresses both sides of the transaction counter. With “Smart Accept,” PhonePe transformed standard smartphones into functional POS terminals for small businesses. Micro-merchants no longer need to buy or lease dedicated card-swiping hardware. Instead, they can accept card-present contactless payments directly on their phones. The transaction data flows directly into their existing PhonePe merchant dashboard, unifying cash, QR, and card sales into a single reconciliation view.

4. Unified Online Tokenization

Security remains a primary concern in cross-border e-commerce. Through Visa’s network tokenization, PhonePe users can securely save their card credentials once inside the app and check out across participating international e-commerce platforms. Sensitive primary account numbers (PANs) are replaced with encrypted digital tokens, reducing fraud risks while eliminating the need to manually re-enter card details for every overseas purchase.

Why PhonePe Is Far More Than a Payments App

While international expansion via Visa secures headlines, it is only one piece of a broader corporate evolution. Under the leadership of CEO Sameer Nigam, PhonePe recognized early on that processing domestic peer-to-peer payments generates massive user engagement but modest bottom-line revenue. To build a sustainable, highly profitable business model, the company leveraged its vast user base—comprising hundreds of millions of registered accounts—to branch into adjacent financial verticals.

1. Wealth Management and Capital Markets

PhonePe made a serious entry into wealth management by launching Share.Market, a dedicated stockbroking and investment platform. Moving beyond basic mutual fund distribution, Share.Market offers retail investors access to equities, Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), and structured quantitative baskets (WealthBaskets). By integrating financial literacy tools, real-time market data, and low-cost trading capabilities, PhonePe converted passive spenders into active investors.

2. Insurance Distribution and Credit Intermediation

Insurance penetration in India remains relatively low, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. PhonePe obtained distribution licenses to offer end-to-end digital insurance products spanning health, motor, term life, and travel insurance. Users can evaluate, purchase, and manage policies entirely within the app in under two minutes.

Concurrently, PhonePe established a high-margin lending marketplace. By analyzing transactional telemetry—such as merchant settlement frequencies and consumer spending patterns—PhonePe acts as a digital distributor for banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). It offers pre-approved consumer credit, buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) options, and short-term working capital loans to millions of small businesses, bearing low customer acquisition costs compared to traditional lenders.

3. Hyperlocal Commerce and Strategic Technology Assets

PhonePe’s ambitions extend well beyond financial services into core consumer technology infrastructure:

  • Indus Appstore: Built to offer a localized alternative to dominant global app stores, Indus supports multiple regional Indian languages and alternative billing systems. It provides localized discovery for regional developers while reducing dependence on third-party app distribution ecosystems.
  • Hyperlocal E-Commerce: Operating on open network frameworks like ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce), PhonePe enables local merchants to list products, manage inventory, and fulfill nearby delivery orders directly through dedicated consumer interfaces.

4. Enterprise Merchant Infrastructure

PhonePe’s presence in Indian retail is anchored by its vast merchant network, covering tens of millions of registered businesses. The iconic PhonePe Smart Speaker (Soundbox)—which provides instant audio verification of incoming payments—helped secure merchant trust across noisy markets. Today, PhonePe provides merchants with a complete operating system: point-of-sale hardware, automated daily settlements, working capital loans, working-capital analytics, and tax compliance tools.

The collaboration with Visa marks a pivotal moment in PhonePe’s growth. By pairing its massive distribution footprint with Visa’s international network, PhonePe has bridge the gap between Indian digital payments and foreign transaction rails.

More importantly, this move illustrates how PhonePe has outgrown its origin story as a basic utility app. By expanding into wealth management, credit distribution, software infrastructure, and international payments, PhonePe has laid the groundwork for a comprehensive financial super-app model tailored for an increasingly globalized user base.
