For decades, Nagaland has held a well-deserved reputation as one of South Asia’s most vibrant cultural crossroads. Celebrated for its rich ancestral traditions, distinct indigenous music, and iconic gatherings like the annual Hornbill Festival, the state has long showcased an extraordinary depth of artistic talent. However, while cultural expression and seasonal celebrations have historically brought national attention to the state, live performances have often been treated primarily as community recreation or periodic tourism highlights rather than a structured, self-sustaining commercial industry.
The Government of Nagaland is now executing a strategic shift. Recognizing that the state’s creative vitality represents an untapped economic driver, state officials are developing a comprehensive Live Entertainment Economy Framework. This bold policy initiative seeks to transform Nagaland into a year-round entertainment powerhouse for Northeast India, turning local creative talents into formal livelihoods, building world-class venue infrastructure, and generating scalable economic returns across allied sectors.
Moving Beyond Recreation: The Economic Imperative
At the core of this policy paradigm shift is a fundamental reassessment of what live entertainment means for state development. During high-level consultative meetings at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in Kohima—led by Secretary for IPR Orenthung Lotha—state leaders emphasized that entertainment can no longer be viewed merely through the lens of leisure or occasional showcase events.
Instead, the live event sector is being repositioned as a viable commercial industry capable of creating measurable, long-term fiscal value. Nagaland possesses a young, digitally connected population with natural musical aptitude and creative drive. Yet, without structured commercial pathways, many young performers, production engineers, and event organizers have had to seek opportunities outside the region or treat their crafts as secondary occupations.
By establishing a formalized live entertainment ecosystem, Nagaland aims to construct an inclusive economic value chain. The vision extends far beyond headline musicians and bands. A fully operational entertainment economy directly stimulates opportunities for:
- Production Professionals: Stage designers, sound and lighting engineers, audio technicians, and logistical managers.
- Creative Service Providers: Event planners, artists, choreographers, security agencies, and media marketing specialists.
- Hospitality and Local Businesses: Hotels, homestays, transport networks, street food vendors, and local craft artisans who benefit from visitor footfall.
Strategic Partnership with LiveNow
To ensure that this strategic initiative is grounded in global best practices and realistic market dynamics, the Nagaland government has appointed LiveNow as its primary consultancy partner. With over a decade of industry expertise in event architecture and economic modeling, LiveNow is tasked with conducting state-wide landscape assessments, identifying systemic bottlenecks, and drafting an actionable blueprint tailored to Nagaland’s unique socio-cultural context.
Led by Director Atsunglir Jamir, the LiveNow team presented preliminary findings from their inception study, charting out both short-term milestones and long-term structural targets. Central to this plan is the creation of “Nagaland Live”—a unified, national brand identity designed to market the state’s live performance capabilities, attract private capital, and signal to global event promoters that Nagaland is ready to host tier-one concerts, festivals, and cultural conventions.
Key Pillars of the Live Entertainment Economy
The policy framework rests on four core pillars designed to elevate Nagaland’s live event capabilities from local showcases to international standards:
1. Year-Round Event Monetization
While seasonal flagship events bring major tourist spikes, sustainable economic growth requires consistency. The strategy prioritizes establishing a year-round calendar of monetized concerts, theatrical performances, independent music showcases, and competitive arts events. Establishing clear monetization avenues—including structured ticketing systems, broadcasting rights, and corporate sponsorships—ensures that financial returns flow back to local performers, technical crews, and regional businesses.
2. Upgrading Physical & Technical Infrastructure
Hosting major national and international tours requires modern, high-capacity infrastructure. The state government and LiveNow are working to identify key venue upgrades across major hubs like Kohima and Dimapur. Investments will focus on modular performance venues, soundproof indoor arenas, standardized staging equipment, and robust power and telecommunications networks required for high-grade audio-visual productions.
3. Skill Standardization & Youth Employment
To ensure local youth are primary beneficiaries of this expansion, the framework incorporates targeted vocational training and skill standardization programs. Partnering with industry experts will allow local talent to gain certifications in live sound engineering, stage safety, digital light programming, and event management, giving local crews the credentials needed to manage large-scale international productions.
4. Cross-Departmental Governance & Experiential Tourism
A thriving live entertainment sector relies on seamless public administration. The state framework mandates inter-departmental coordination across Information and Public Relations (IPR), Tourism, Art and Culture, Youth Resources, and Transport. Streamlining single-window event clearances, security protocols, and visitor transit systems will create a frictionless environment for private event promoters. This infrastructure will directly bolster experiential tourism, inviting travelers to experience Nagaland’s landscapes, food, and hospitality alongside live musical and cultural acts.
Positioning Nagaland as the Cultural Engine of the Northeast
The development of the Live Entertainment Economy Framework marks a crucial milestone in Nagaland’s economic trajectory. By fusing its rich musical heritage with structured policy, corporate investment, and technical excellence, Nagaland is taking clear steps to solidify its position as the undisputed live entertainment capital of Northeast India.
This initiative reflects a progressive realization: creativity, when paired with institutional support and commercial vision, serves as a powerful engine for youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth. As the “Nagaland Live” brand takes shape, the state is poised to demonstrate how cultural heritage can be converted into a thriving modern economy.
