When World War II erupted across Europe, Africa, and the Pacific, traditional military doctrines relied on massive industrial power, dense infantry formations, and heavy artillery. Yet, as front lines rapidly shifted and vast swathes of territory fell under enemy occupation, military strategists realized that brute force alone could not secure victory. What was required was a new breed of soldier: small, specialized units trained in deep-reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, covert insertion, and high-stakes sabotage behind enemy lines. The crucible of World War II gave birth to modern special operations, establishing techniques, tactics, and specialized units whose legacies shape elite warfare to this day.
Allied Innovations in Unconventional Warfare
Faced with a conquered European continent and a rapidly expanding Japanese Empire, the Allied powers recognized that asymmetric warfare was critical to disrupting Axis supply chains, gathering intelligence, and empowering local resistance movements.
British Commandos and the Special Air Service (SAS)
Following the evacuation at Dunkirk in 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called for “specially trained troops of the hunter class” to inflict raids on Axis-occupied coastlines. This led directly to the establishment of the British Commandos. Operating with extreme agility, these forces conducted daring amphibious assaults across Norway, France, and the Mediterranean.
Building upon the commando concept, David Stirling founded the Special Air Service (SAS) in North Africa in 1941. Designed to operate deep in the desert behind enemy lines, the SAS targeted Axis airfields, blowing up aircraft on the ground before escaping into the vast Sahara. As the war progressed, the SAS transitioned from desert raiding to parachute insertions behind enemy lines in Western Europe, disrupting German troop movements during and after the D-Day landings.
The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG)
Often working hand-in-hand with the SAS, the Long Range Desert Group was master of desert navigation and intelligence gathering. Operating modified all-terrain vehicles equipped with heavy weaponry and extra fuel, the LRDG traversed thousands of miles of trackless, deep desert. They monitored Axis troop movements along North African highways and served as the covert transport service for other clandestine units operating deep within hostile territory.
The Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the OSS
In 1940, Churchill directed the formation of the Special Operations Executive with a clear command: “Set Europe ablaze.” The SOE functioned as a clandestine intelligence and sabotage organization. SOE agents—both men and women—were parachuted into occupied countries to build underground networks, coordinate sabotage against railways and industrial plants, and supply local resistance fighters with weapons and radio communications.
In the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the creation of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) under General William “Wild Bill” Donovan. As the predecessor to the modern Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and US Army Special Forces, the OSS operated Operational Groups and “Jedburgh” teams. These three-man multinational teams parachuted into occupied France, Belgium, and the Balkans, serving as vital force multipliers by linking Allied high command with local partisan fighters.
American and Joint Elite Units
The United States military adapted quickly to the necessity of specialized assault forces:
- US Army Rangers: Formed in Northern Ireland in 1942 and modeled after the British Commandos, the 1st Ranger Battalion under Major William O. Darby proved its mettle in North Africa and Italy. During the Normandy invasion, the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions famously scaled the 100-foot cliffs of Pointe du Hoc under intense enemy fire to destroy German coastal artillery. Later in the war, the 6th Ranger Battalion executed the raid at Cabanatuan in the Philippines, liberating over 500 Allied prisoners of war from deep behind Japanese lines.
- 1st Special Service Force (“The Devil’s Brigade”): A unique joint American-Canadian unit, the 1st Special Service Force was trained in winter warfare, mountaineering, amphibious operations, and hand-to-hand combat. Operating in the harsh mountain terrain of Italy and later in Southern France, they earned the nickname “The Devil’s Brigade” from terrified German defenders due to their aggressive night raids, stealth tactics, and blackened faces.
- Merrill’s Marauders and the Chindits: In the dense, unforgiving jungles of the China-Burma-India theater, specialized long-range penetration units played a pivotal role. The British “Chindits,” organized by Brigadier Orde Wingate, relied on air drops and pack mules to march deep into Japanese-held Burma to cut supply lines. Similarly, the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), popularly known as Merrill’s Marauders, marched over 1,000 miles through jungle terrain to capture the strategic airfield at Myitkyina.
Axis Counterparts and Covert Operators
Axis powers also recognized the potential of specialized assault and covert groups, utilizing them for high-risk strategic insertions and sabotage.
The Brandenburgers
The German Wehrmacht established the Brandenburgers long before the outbreak of general war. Operating under the Abwehr (German military intelligence), members of this elite division were fluent in multiple languages and trained in infiltration, demolition, and counter-insurgency. During the early Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland, Western Europe, and the Soviet Union, Brandenburgers disguised themselves in foreign uniforms or civilian clothes to secure vital bridges, seize rail hubs, and conduct sabotage hours ahead of advancing armored columns.
SS-Jagdverbände and Otto Skorzeny
As the war turned against Germany, covert operations increasingly fell under the control of the SS. Waffen-SS commander Otto Skorzeny became one of the most famous covert operatives of the war. He led the SS-Jagdverbände in high-profile missions, most notably Operation Eiche in September 1943—a daring glider assault on the Gran Sasso mountain resort in Italy that rescued deposed dictator Benito Mussolini from captivity. Later, during the Battle of the Bulge, Skorzeny’s operatives wore captured American uniforms and drove Allied vehicles behind US lines to sow confusion and panic.
Decima Flottiglia MAS
Italy’s premier special force was the Decima Flottiglia MAS (10th Assault Vehicle Flotilla), an elite naval commando organization. Pioneering the use of human torpedoes—slow-speed, manned submersible craft known as Maiali—and explosive motorboats, these frogmen infiltrated heavily defended Allied ports. Their most notable triumph occurred in December 1941, when Italian divers entered the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt, and planted limpet mines that severely damaged two British battleships.
The Legacy of World War II Special Forces
Prior to World War II, elite military units were largely viewed as auxiliary experimental groups. However, the operational successes of the SAS, US Army Rangers, OSS, and joint commando forces proved that small, highly skilled teams could achieve strategic results completely disproportionate to their numerical size.
When the war ended in 1945, these specialized units provided the structural blueprint, tactical doctrine, and operational mindset for modern special forces around the globe—including the US Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs, British Special Boat Service (SBS), and modern counter-terrorism forces today. World War II transformed special operations from an unconventional gamble into an indispensable pillar of global defense.
