Ronaldinho: From Football Legend to Bankrupt Criminal

****

Ronaldinho, born Ronaldo de Assis Moreira on March 21, 1980, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, rose from humble beginnings to become one of football’s most electrifying and beloved talents. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he dazzled fans with his outrageous skill, joyful style, and trademark smile.

### The Rise: A Football Magician

Ronaldinho grew up in a working-class family; his father was a shipyard worker and amateur footballer who died when Ronaldinho was young. He joined Grêmio’s youth setup and made his senior debut in 1998. His breakthrough came on the international stage with Brazil’s 1999 Copa América win and the 2002 World Cup triumph, where he scored a memorable free-kick goal against England in the quarter-finals.

In 2001, he moved to Paris Saint-Germain, establishing himself as a star in Ligue 1. Then came his prime at FC Barcelona (2003–2008). Signed for around €30 million, he transformed the club during a difficult period, helping them win La Liga in 2004–05 and the UEFA Champions League in 2005–06. His performances earned him back-to-back FIFA World Player of the Year awards (2004 and 2005) and the 2005 Ballon d’Or. Highlights included two stunning solo goals in El Clásico that drew a rare standing ovation from Real Madrid fans at the Bernabéu.

He later joined AC Milan (winning Serie A in 2010–11), returned to Brazil with Flamengo and Atlético Mineiro (claiming the 2013 Copa Libertadores), and had stints in Mexico before retiring in 2018. Off the pitch, his charisma and love for the game made him a global icon, with massive endorsement deals from Nike, Pepsi, and others.

### The Decline: Lifestyle, Injuries, and Poor Management

Ronaldinho’s peak was relatively short. By the 2007–08 season at Barcelona, reports emerged of reduced focus, late nights, partying, and declining fitness. Injuries also played a role. His performances dipped, leading to his departure from Camp Nou.

Post-retirement issues mounted. He faced significant financial troubles, including unpaid taxes and fines in Brazil. In 2018–2019, authorities seized dozens of his properties due to debts, and his Brazilian passport was confiscated over environmental fines and other issues. Stories circulated of him being left with very little in his bank account amid lavish spending, poor investments, and mismanagement (often handled by his brother Roberto de Assis).

He ventured into business, including cryptocurrency promotions and other deals, some of which drew scrutiny for questionable schemes promising high returns.

### The Criminal Chapter: Paraguay Passport Fraud (2020)

The most publicized low point came in March 2020. Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto traveled to Paraguay for a promotional event. They were arrested after entering the country using falsified Paraguayan passports. The documents reportedly had their photos and names but were issued under different identities. A businesswoman named Dalia Lopez was accused of providing them.

The brothers denied knowingly committing fraud, with claims that Ronaldinho was naive or unaware. They spent about 32 days in a Paraguayan prison in Asunción, including Ronaldinho’s 40th birthday. Conditions were relatively lenient—he reportedly played futsal, won a prison tournament, and signed autographs for inmates.

They were later moved to house arrest in a hotel. In August 2020, a plea deal resolved the case: Ronaldinho was released from custody, but his brother accepted a criminal record. They paid a fine. Prosecutors explored links to wider networks involving forgery or money laundering, but Ronaldinho was not ultimately convicted of deeper crimes in that episode. He had no prior criminal convictions of this nature.

Earlier Brazilian legal issues involved tax debts, fines for illegal building/construction, and asset seizures—not “bankrupt criminal” in the sense of major fraud convictions, but serious financial mismanagement.

### Where He Stands Today (as of 2026)

Ronaldinho has largely stayed out of major new legal troubles since the Paraguay incident. He remains active in football legends matches, promotional work, music (with his “Tropa Do Druxo” collective), and social media. Recent estimates of his net worth vary widely—some sources cite £63 million or even higher, largely from past earnings, endorsements, and ongoing deals, though others note he has faced ongoing money problems.

A recent documentary has revisited his highs and lows, and he has become a grandfather. His story is often framed as a cautionary tale of immense talent undermined by lack of discipline, poor financial oversight, and bad decisions—yet many still remember him fondly for the pure joy he brought to the game.

In short, Ronaldinho was never a hardened “criminal” in the typical sense, but a football genius whose post-career life spiraled due to financial woes, unpaid debts, and one naive (or reckless) passport incident that landed him briefly behind bars. His legacy on the pitch remains untarnished for millions of fans.
