Suspect Identified in White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting

**Washington, D.C.** — Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old part-time teacher, mechanical engineer, and video game developer from Torrance, California, has been identified as the suspect in the April 25, 2026, shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

Allen allegedly charged a Secret Service security checkpoint near the ballroom where President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, and approximately 2,600 guests were gathered. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, he fired shots that struck a uniformed Secret Service officer in the chest. The officer was protected by a ballistic vest and is expected to make a full recovery. Allen was quickly tackled and arrested at the scene, sustaining only a minor knee injury. No other injuries were reported, and the president and other principals were safely evacuated.

Authorities say Allen traveled cross-country to Washington, D.C., and was staying at the hotel. Surveillance video captured him rushing the checkpoint. He had purchased the shotgun used in the incident in August 2025 and owned a semiautomatic pistol bought in 2023, both acquired lawfully.

### Background and Profile
Allen holds an engineering degree and has been linked to studies at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he participated in a Christian fellowship, as well as Cal State Dominguez Hills. He worked as a part-time educator, including test prep for college-age students, and was involved in mechanical engineering and video game development. He lived with his parents in Torrance, where neighbors described the family as “solid and peaceful.”

His social media activity reportedly evolved over time, shifting from topics like video games to increasingly strident anti-Trump political commentary, including comparisons of the president to Hitler and calls for critics to arm themselves.

### Motive and Pre-Attack Communications
Minutes before the attack, Allen sent a message to family members stating it was his “duty” to target Trump administration officials. In the note, he referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin,” criticized administration policies such as efforts on drug smuggling, and apologized for abusing their trust. Investigators have uncovered additional anti-Trump writings and social media posts, leading authorities to classify the incident as politically motivated.

### Legal Proceedings
On Monday, April 27, 2026, Allen was arraigned in federal court in Washington, D.C. He faces three charges: attempt to assassinate the president, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony. He appeared in court, acknowledged his rights, and was ordered detained pending further proceedings. The charges carry significant penalties, including the possibility of life in prison.

The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue to examine Allen’s background, travels, and communications. No additional suspects have been identified, and the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner concluded without further disruption after the incident.

This case has drawn renewed attention to security protocols at major Washington events and the broader climate of political rhetoric in the United States.
