Prince Andrew’s Troubling Behavior Toward Palace Staff: A Pattern of Entitlement, Outbursts, and Disrespect

For decades, Britain’s Prince Andrew, Duke of York, has been under scrutiny for both his public controversies and his personal behavior behind palace walls. Now, a wave of new revelations from biographies, documentaries, and eyewitness accounts paints an increasingly troubling picture of a royal plagued by entitlement, arrogance, and hostility toward those around him.

A History of Disrespect: The “Imbecile” Incident

In Andrew Lownie’s latest biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, palace insiders describe shocking episodes of verbal abuse that highlight the Duke’s temper. One incident from 2005 stands out: while at Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland, Prince Andrew reportedly lashed out at a palace employee who failed to correctly refer to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

“You f-king imbecile. Get out,” Andrew allegedly yelled, in what Lownie describes as a prime example of his cruel streak. Accounts like this reveal how the Duke of York, rather than embodying dignity and restraint, often resorted to aggressive language when addressing those who worked under him.

Bullying and Petty Orders

The book further portrays Andrew as “unbelievably cruel” and “bossy,” notorious for treating palace staff as disposable and ordering them about with little regard for their dignity. His demands were rarely reasonable. He was known to bark instructions such as, “I want this done and I want this done now. Do it!”

Other authors, such as Tom Quinn, recount episodes in which Andrew allegedly dismissed staff over trivial matters—whether because someone wore a nylon tie, or because a servant had a mole on their face that he disliked. These anecdotes suggest not just a difficult temperament, but a man prone to capricious whims, using his rank to enforce personal dislikes as rules of conduct.

Documentary Revelations: A Duke of Excess

These disturbing accounts are echoed in the Channel 5 documentary Andrew and Fergie: The Duke and Duchess of Excess. Former staff members recall that Andrew regularly commanded workers to fetch trivial items—golf balls, tissues, or other nonessential things he could have easily obtained himself.

Such behavior reinforced his image as an entitled royal out of touch with modern expectations of humility and respect. Instead of projecting leadership and responsibility, Andrew reportedly treated the palace as his personal playground and staff as servants at his beck and call.

The Modern Outburst: A Public Display of Temper

If these stories from books and documentaries reflect Andrew’s long-standing behavior, his actions in August 2025 confirm that little has changed. On August 12, witnesses reported that Andrew—while out riding his horse—confronted workers installing a speed bump near his Windsor residence, Royal Lodge.

“What the f**k are you doing now?” he allegedly shouted at the road crew, in a profanity-laced tirade that quickly made headlines. The incident mirrored his reputation for impatience, arrogance, and an inability to engage with ordinary people respectfully.

The Broader Pattern

What emerges from these accounts is a consistent pattern rather than isolated missteps. Whether in the privacy of palaces or in the open fields of Windsor, Prince Andrew has been repeatedly portrayed as domineering, entitled, and volatile. His treatment of staff appears not to reflect gratitude for their service, but rather disdain for their humanity.

Even more striking is the consistency across sources—royal biographers, palace insiders, documentary filmmakers, and now construction workers—each adding evidence of a man whose behavior runs counter to the duty and decorum expected of a senior royal.

Silence from the Palace

So far, Buckingham Palace and Andrew’s representatives have chosen not to respond to these specific allegations. The refusal to issue clarifications or denials may reflect the royal household’s long-standing policy of avoiding direct comment on damaging personal claims. Yet the absence of a rebuttal leaves the allegations hanging, reinforcing the image of Andrew as a royal increasingly defined by scandal rather than service.

A Damaged Legacy

Prince Andrew’s standing within the royal family and in the public eye has already been severely diminished by his association with Jeffrey Epstein and his disastrous 2019 BBC interview. These new revelations only deepen the impression of a man at odds with the values of humility, respect, and service that the monarchy publicly champions.

While some may dismiss these accounts as exaggerations, the accumulation of similar stories across decades builds a compelling case. Prince Andrew’s legacy is no longer defined by his title or his past as a naval officer, but by a reputation for arrogance, entitlement, and an inability to treat others with dignity.

For the staff who endured his outbursts, the workers who felt the brunt of his temper, and the public who watch the monarchy with ever-greater scrutiny, the Duke of York’s behavior remains a cautionary tale of what happens when privilege is unchecked by accountability.
