Mahindra has officially revealed a purpose-built All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) derived from the popular Thar Roxx platform, engineered exclusively for the Indian military and security forces. The vehicle was showcased on May 4, 2026, highlighting Mahindra’s growing expertise in defence mobility solutions.
Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, shared the development on social media, describing the ATV as a vehicle with “no excess, no ornamentation.” The design philosophy focuses purely on capability, resilience, and adaptability for the harshest operating environments — from high-altitude mountains to deserts and dense jungles.
Stripped for Mission Capability
Unlike the civilian 5-door Thar Roxx SUV, this military variant removes all luxury elements to prioritise tactical utility and survivability. Key modifications include:
- Tactical and Recovery Features: A front-mounted winch, gun mount, full underbody protection, and windshield protector.
- Extended Logistics: Tandem tyre carrier and jerrycan holders to support long-range operations without frequent resupply.
- Rapid Deployment: Designed to be airdrop-ready, enabling quick insertion by air into remote or contested areas.
- Extreme Off-Road Upgrades: Significantly increased ground clearance, reinforced chassis and body structure, heavy-duty suspension components, aggressive all-terrain tyres, reinforced bumpers, and an open-body configuration with roll-cage for improved visibility and durability.
Every component — from mounting points to protective bars — serves a direct functional purpose, emphasising mobility, protection, and operational effectiveness in extreme conditions.
Proven Platform with Military DNA
The ATV builds on the Thar Roxx’s robust ladder-frame chassis, proven 4×4 system with low-range gearing, and strong off-road geometry. While exact military specifications have not been disclosed, the vehicle is expected to use tuned versions of the civilian powertrains:
- 2.2-litre diesel engine (approximately 172 hp and 370 Nm)
- 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (approximately 174 hp and 380 Nm)
Petrol variants may be preferred for high-altitude operations where diesel performance can be affected. The four-wheel-drive system remains a core strength, optimised for challenging terrain.
Part of Mahindra’s Expanding Defence Portfolio
This new Thar Roxx-based ATV joins Mahindra’s growing line of defence vehicles, which includes the Armado armoured light specialist vehicle, Marksman, Rakshak, and various mine-protected platforms. Mahindra has a long history of supplying rugged vehicles like the Scorpio to Indian forces, and the Thar Roxx (launched in 2024) provides a modern, more practical base for tactical applications.
No information has been released regarding production timelines, quantities, or any potential civilian spin-off. The vehicle is developed solely for security and armed forces requirements.
The reveal underscores Mahindra’s ability to adapt its successful civilian off-roaders into highly capable military machines tailored to India’s diverse operational needs. This Thar Roxx ATV looks set to become a reliable workhorse for troops operating in some of the world’s most demanding environments.
