Chennai: Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay, who has transitioned into full-time politics as the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has declared total assets worth Rs 624 crore in his election affidavit submitted on March 30, 2026. The detailed filing reveals a highly conservative wealth management strategy focused on capital preservation, liquidity, and minimal market exposure.
According to the affidavit analysed by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), Vijay’s net worth comprises Rs 404 crore in movable assets and Rs 220 crore in immovable assets. His income for FY 2024-25 stood at Rs 184.53 crore, primarily from film-related self-employment, rental income, and interest.
Massive Bank Holdings for Safety and Liquidity
The most striking feature of Vijay’s portfolio is the overwhelming preference for bank deposits. Over half his wealth is parked in guaranteed-return instruments, shielding it from market volatility.
- A single regular savings account at Indian Overseas Bank’s Saligramam branch holds a massive Rs 213.36 crore as of March 27, 2026. This one account alone accounts for more than one-third of his total declared fortune.
- In addition, he has fixed deposits worth Rs 100 crore spread across four banks:
- Axis Bank (Indira Nagar): Rs 40 crore
- Indian Overseas Bank (Kodambakkam): Rs 25 crore
- HDFC Bank (Besant Nagar): Rs 20 crore
- State Bank of India (Shastri Nagar): Rs 15 crore
This approach ensures immediate liquidity and zero exposure to equity market risks.
Minimal Stock Market Exposure
Vijay’s equity investments are negligible, totalling just Rs 19.37 lakh — less than 0.04% of his net worth.
- Shares in Jaya Nagar Property Pvt Ltd: Rs 19.03 lakh
- Indian Overseas Bank shares: Rs 9,600
- Sun Paper Mill Ltd shares: Rs 25,000
Notably, there are no mutual funds, bonds, debentures, or other market-linked instruments in his declaration.
Real Estate Portfolio Worth Rs 220 Crore
Immovable assets form the second-largest component of Vijay’s wealth and serve as a steady source of rental income. The portfolio includes:
- Residential properties (Neelankarai, Saligramam, Mylapore, Egmore and others) valued at around Rs 115 crore.
- Commercial properties (Thyagaraya Nagar, Sholinganallur, Koppur etc.) worth approximately Rs 82.8 crore. A standout holding is a 2.3-acre plot in Koppur acquired in 2023 for Rs 35.81 crore.
- Non-agricultural land in areas like Porur valued at around Rs 22 crore.
- Small agricultural plots in Kodaikanal worth Rs 20 lakh.
Vijay serves as Managing Director of Jaya Nagar Property Pvt Ltd, the entity linked to several of these holdings.
Other Notable Assets and Liabilities
- Vehicles: Luxury cars worth Rs 13.52 crore, including a 2024 Lexus 350, BMW i7, Toyota Vellfire, and others.
- Jewellery: Significant gold and diamond holdings for Vijay and his spouse Sangeetha Vijay.
- Loans and Advances: Rs 75.5 crore extended to family members, educational trusts (Kokilambal Educational Foundation and Vidya Charitable Trust), and other entities.
- Spouse’s Assets: Sangeetha Vijay holds assets worth Rs 15.76 crore, largely following a similar conservative pattern with a prominent Rs 10 crore fixed deposit.
Liabilities remain relatively modest, primarily consisting of four pending income tax demands exceeding Rs 3 crore, mostly related to older assessment years following a 2015 tax search.
A Philosophy of Capital Preservation
Vijay’s financial strategy reflects classic capital preservation: keeping the bulk of wealth in safe bank accounts and fixed deposits, relying on real estate for stable yields, and avoiding speculative or equity-heavy investments. This conservative style is not uncommon among high-net-worth individuals from the film industry, especially those entering politics where liquidity and stability are prized.
The declaration comes amid heightened public scrutiny following TVK’s performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. As with all such affidavits, the figures are self-reported and reflect the actor-politician’s financial position as of late March 2026.
