Chennai, May 5, 2026: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections but falls short of the majority mark, triggering intense post-poll negotiations for a coalition government.
According to final results, TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, needing 118 for a simple majority. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) trailed significantly with around 59-60 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won about 47 seats. Smaller parties, including Congress (5 seats), PMK (4 seats), IUML (2 seats), and Left parties (CPI and CPI(M) with 2 seats each), now hold the key to government formation.
Coalition Talks Underway
Sources indicate TVK is prioritizing talks with the Congress and Left parties to stitch together a coalition. Vijay’s father has publicly extended an invitation to the Congress, expressing willingness to share power. Rahul Gandhi reportedly congratulated Vijay on the strong performance, adding momentum to speculation of a possible alliance.
Congress leaders are said to be in internal discussions, with some regretting their decision to stay with the DMK-led alliance during the polls. A potential arrangement could see Congress getting 2-3 Cabinet berths in exchange for support. The Left parties are also holding consultations on extending backing to TVK.
Together with smaller allies like VCK (2 seats) and IUML, a TVK-led bloc could narrowly cross the majority threshold. Reports suggest 4-6 ministerial positions may be offered to alliance partners to address TVK’s relative inexperience in governance.
Historic Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
TVK’s impressive debut in its maiden election has disrupted Tamil Nadu’s long-standing Dravidian duopoly. The party, driven by promises on youth employment, women’s welfare, and anti-drug campaigns, appealed strongly to first-time voters and urban constituencies, including a near-sweep in Chennai.
Vijay is expected to be formally elected as the TVK legislative party leader shortly. Once support is consolidated, the party plans to approach the Governor with a claim to form the government.
Challenges Ahead
Negotiations remain fluid. Congress faces a dilemma in breaking from its INDIA bloc ties with DMK, while Left parties are proceeding cautiously. Alternative scenarios, including outside support from other smaller parties or independents, are also being explored, though the Congress-Left route appears most prominent in current reports.
This development signals a potential era of coalition politics in Tamil Nadu, which has traditionally seen stable single-party or pre-poll alliance governments. Political observers are watching closely as formal meetings and announcements unfold in the coming days.
