DPR Complete: Ward’s Lake Renovation Awaits Final Nod from Centre

Shillong, May 18, 2026: The Meghalaya Tourism Department has finalised the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the much-awaited revitalisation of Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok), one of Shillong’s most iconic heritage sites. The project now awaits final approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) before major restoration works can begin.

According to Tourism Director Brenda Lee Pakyntein, the DPR has been forwarded to the Forest Department for submission to the central ministry. Once clearance is received, the department will share further details on the implementation timeline and tender process.

The century-old lake, constructed in 1894, is set to undergo comprehensive ecological restoration while strictly preserving its historical character. Key components of the project include desiltation of the lake bed, water treatment and oxygenation measures, along with landscaping and beautification works aimed at improving the overall environment without altering the site’s heritage essence.

A major highlight of the conservation-focused plan is the retention and strengthening of the iconic Japanese-style wooden bridge. Structural assessments have confirmed that the bridge remains durable, and it will be reinforced rather than replaced. Additional pedestrian-friendly improvements will be introduced to enhance visitor experience while maintaining the lake’s tranquil atmosphere.

Ward’s Lake was formally handed over from the Forest Department to the Tourism Department in mid-2025 as part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate the city’s key tourist destinations. The project has generated considerable public interest, with residents and stakeholders emphasising the need to balance tourism promotion with the preservation of the lake’s natural and historical value.

Officials have described the upcoming works as a significant step towards restoring the ecological health of the water body and ensuring it remains a cherished landmark for future generations. The total investment for the lake’s restoration is expected to be in the range of ₹20 crore, with earlier phases already including provisions for desiltation and transitional development activities.

The final nod from MoEF&CC is now crucial for the project to move forward. Once approved, implementation is likely to commence in the coming months, bringing renewed life to this beloved Shillong landmark.
