New Delhi: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has publicly highlighted his deep personal and familial connections to Nepal, describing himself as “a son of a Nepali mother” due to his mother’s roots in the historic Rana lineage of Nepal.
Scindia made the remarks while engaging with communities in India’s North Eastern region, where he interacted fluently in Nepali with locals and children. His comments underscore the longstanding cultural and historical ties between certain Indian royal families and Nepal’s influential Rana dynasty.
Roots in the Rana Dynasty
Scindia’s mother, Madhavi Raje Scindia (born Kiran Rajya Lakshmi Devi), belongs to Nepal’s prominent Rana family. She is the granddaughter of Juddha Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, who served as Prime Minister of Nepal and was a key figure in the Rana regime.
The Rana dynasty exercised significant power in Nepal as hereditary Prime Ministers for over a century, from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, while the Shah monarchs remained the titular heads of state. Through strategic marriages, the Ranas built strong alliances with several Indian princely families, including the Scindias of Gwalior.
Scindia has often spoken about growing up in an environment where Nepali was spoken at home with his mother and grandmother, allowing him to maintain a natural fluency in the language and a strong emotional bond with Nepali culture.
Strengthened Family Ties
The family’s connection to Nepal extends further. Scindia’s wife, Priyadarshini Raje Gaekwad, also shares links with the Rana lineage, reinforcing the deep-rooted relationship between the two sides of the family and Nepal.
This heritage holds particular relevance in India’s Northeast, where Nepali-speaking communities form an important part of the social fabric. Scindia’s recent engagements in the region celebrated this shared cultural heritage, fostering a sense of closeness between India and Nepal at the people-to-people level.
By openly embracing his maternal Nepali identity, Jyotiraditya Scindia has drawn attention to the rich history of cross-border royal alliances that continue to influence cultural diplomacy between the two neighboring nations.
