New Delhi, May 23, 2026 — US Secretary of State Marco Rubio pitched American energy exports as a strategic solution to diversify India’s energy supplies during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
Rubio told Modi that “US energy products have the potential to diversify India’s energy supply.” He reiterated his pre-visit statement that the United States is prepared to sell India “as much energy as they’ll buy,” amid ongoing global supply uncertainties triggered by the Iran conflict.
Energy Security in Focus
The discussions come at a critical time as the Iran war has disrupted global oil markets and raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for much of India’s crude oil imports. Rubio emphasized that the US “will not let Iran hold the global energy market hostage,” positioning American oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) as reliable alternatives.
India, the world’s third-largest energy consumer, has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian oil in recent years. However, persistent geopolitical risks in West Asia have prompted New Delhi to actively seek diversification of its energy basket.
The US, currently producing and exporting oil and gas at historic levels, sees India as a major growth market for its energy sector. Rubio’s pitch also included possibilities for facilitating supplies from other sources, such as Venezuela, according to earlier remarks.
Broader Bilateral Agenda
Beyond energy, the hour-long meeting between Rubio and Modi covered trade, defense cooperation, supply chain security, emerging technologies, and the situation in the Middle East. Rubio extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit the White House on behalf of President Donald Trump, highlighting the strong personal rapport between the two leaders.
Rubio described India as a “great partner” and noted that the relationship between PM Modi and President Trump is anchoring the bilateral ties.
This visit is Rubio’s first to India as Secretary of State. It includes stops in Kolkata and precedes the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for May 26 in New Delhi.
Strategic and Economic Implications
For India, deeper energy ties with the US could enhance energy security, reduce dependence on any single region, and support its ambitious economic growth targets. While actual import volumes will depend on commercial competitiveness, logistics, and pricing, the US offer aligns with India’s multi-alignment approach to foreign policy.
The push also reflects broader US efforts to expand energy exports globally and strengthen strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting marks a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at repairing and elevating India-US relations, which have faced strains over trade tariffs and other issues in recent times.
The story continues to develop as Rubio’s four-day visit progresses.
