Thiruvananthapuram — V.D. Satheesan, a seasoned lawyer and sharp parliamentarian, has emerged as the architect of the Indian National Congress’s resurgence in Kerala. In May 2026, he was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of the state, leading the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) back to power after a decade in opposition.
From Courtroom to Assembly
Born on 31 May 1964 in Nettoor near Kochi in Ernakulam district, Vadasseri Damodara Menon Satheesan comes from a modest background. He completed his BA in Sociology from Sacred Heart College, Thevara, followed by an LLB from Kerala Law Academy and an LLM from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work from Rajagiri College.
Before fully committing to politics, Satheesan practised as a lawyer at the Kerala High Court for nearly a decade in the 1990s. His legal training shaped his style — precise, articulate, and unflinching in cross-examination — traits that would later define his political persona.
A Steady Political Ascent
Satheesan’s political journey began in student politics. He served as Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union under the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and later as Secretary of the National Students Union of India (NSUI). His organisational skills and oratory prowess helped him climb the ranks steadily.
Since 2001, he has been elected six consecutive times as MLA from the Paravur constituency in Ernakulam, showcasing strong local support and consistent performance. He served as Vice President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and, most notably, as Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2021 to 2026.
As LoP, Satheesan earned widespread recognition for his aggressive yet measured attacks on the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. He consistently raised issues related to corruption, nepotism, deteriorating law and order, and fiscal mismanagement, keeping the ruling dispensation under constant scrutiny.
The Face of Congress Revival
The 2026 Kerala Assembly elections marked a decisive shift. Under Satheesan’s visible leadership, the UDF secured a landslide victory with 102 seats, ending the CPI(M)-led LDF’s ten-year hold on power. His ability to unify party factions, rebuild cadre morale, and present a credible alternative narrative proved crucial to the comeback.
Following internal consultations, Satheesan was selected as Chief Minister. He was sworn in on 18 May 2026 at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium along with a 20-member cabinet. Many observers describe him as the “face of Congress’s comeback” in Kerala — a calm, disciplined leader who prefers substance over spectacle.
Personal Life and Interests
Satheesan is married to R. Lakshmi Priya, and the couple has one daughter. Known for maintaining a relatively low-profile personal life, he is an avid reader with interests in literature, trekking, and social service. Colleagues often refer to him as “VD” or “VDS,” appreciating his focus on constituency development and legislative diligence.
As he takes charge of the state, V.D. Satheesan faces the challenging task of balancing Kerala’s ambitious development goals with its renowned social welfare model, while addressing fiscal concerns and delivering on the expectations of a mandate for change. His experience as a lawyer, debater, and long-serving legislator positions him uniquely for this responsibility.
