Brazilian President Lula Begins Radiation Therapy After Early-Stage Skin Cancer Diagnosis

São Paulo, Brazil – May 25, 2026 – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has started preventive radiation therapy following the successful removal of an early-stage skin cancer lesion from his scalp.

According to a statement from Hospital Sírio-Libanês, the 80-year-old leader began the first of 15 superficial radiation sessions on Monday morning. The treatment is expected to last three weeks and is described as a precautionary measure after the lesion was excised in late April.

Doctors identified the lesion as basal cell carcinoma, the most common and least aggressive form of skin cancer. The carcinoma was caught early, had not spread, and was removed through minor surgery. Medical officials emphasized that the condition is routine for someone of Lula’s age with a history of sun exposure and carries an excellent prognosis.

“The treatment is preventive and superficial,” the hospital noted. “President Lula is expected to experience no significant side effects and will maintain his regular work schedule and presidential duties during this period.”

This latest health procedure is unrelated to Lula’s previous battle with laryngeal cancer, which he successfully overcame in 2011–2012.

Basal cell carcinomas are highly treatable when detected early. They rarely metastasize and are typically linked to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Lula’s medical team has reassured the public that the condition will not interfere with his governmental responsibilities or upcoming political activities.

The announcement comes amid Lula’s continued leadership of Brazil’s government as he navigates key domestic and international issues. Officials have confirmed that the president remains in good overall health and is fully committed to his role.

No further complications are anticipated, and updates will be provided as necessary by the presidential medical team.
