Apple is reportedly working on a significant new anti-theft feature designed to combat snatch-and-grab thefts, one of the most common ways iPhones are stolen in crowded areas.
The upcoming upgrade builds upon the existing Stolen Device Protection feature, which was introduced in iOS 17.3 and is now enabled by default in newer versions. While the current protection activates restrictions when the device is away from familiar locations, the new system aims to provide instant, proactive defense during the critical moments immediately after a theft.
How the New Feature Will Work
According to code discoveries, the feature will leverage the iPhone’s built-in sensors — including the accelerometer and gyroscope — to detect sudden, aggressive movements that indicate the phone has been yanked from a user’s hand. It may also analyze additional context such as rapid separation from a paired Apple Watch, unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks, or unusual location patterns.
Once triggered, the iPhone would automatically lock itself right away. This immediate lockdown would prevent thieves from accessing open apps, viewing personal data, or making quick changes in those first vulnerable seconds. The system is expected to further enhance Stolen Device Protection by enforcing stricter biometric requirements (Face ID or Touch ID) and security delays for sensitive actions like changing the Apple ID password.
This approach mirrors Google’s Theft Detection Lock on Android devices, which has already proven effective in similar scenarios.
Current Development Status
The feature is still in active development and has not yet been officially announced by Apple. Reports based on internal code sightings emerged in late May 2026, suggesting it could be introduced in a future iOS update, possibly iOS 27 or later. It may also debut alongside new iPhone hardware. Many expect more details to surface at WWDC or during the fall product launch cycle.
Strong Protections Already Available
Even without the new feature, iPhone users already benefit from robust anti-theft tools:
- Stolen Device Protection: Requires biometric authentication and adds delays for major account changes when the device is not at known safe locations like home or work.
- Find My Network and Activation Lock: Makes a stolen iPhone extremely difficult to wipe, reactivate, or resell.
- AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss: Offers optional financial protection against theft.
The new sensor-based snatch detection is expected to close a key gap — protecting unlocked phones that are actively being used when stolen.
This development reflects Apple’s ongoing focus on security and user safety, particularly in regions experiencing high rates of smartphone theft. Users should stay updated through official iOS releases for the final implementation details and activation options.
