Apple’s All-Glass iPhone Dream Hits a Major Roadblock: 20th Anniversary Redesign Reportedly Scrapped

Apple’s long-running ambition to create a true “single slab of glass” iPhone appears to have hit a serious snag. According to a fresh analysis from Jefferies, the radical all-glass redesign long expected for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027 has been canceled due to poor manufacturing yields. The news, which contributed to a stock downgrade, raises questions about whether Apple’s most ambitious hardware vision in years will ever materialize in its purest form.
For more than a year, industry watchers have anticipated a transformative redesign timed to the iPhone’s two-decade milestone. The original iPhone launched in 2007. Ten years later, the iPhone X delivered a landmark overhaul that eliminated the Home button, introduced Face ID, and ushered in the era of edge-to-edge displays. Many expected a similarly bold statement for the 20th anniversary. Reports consistently described a device that would look and feel like a continuous piece of glass—front and back—with almost no visible bezels, cutouts, or interruptions.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and multiple supply-chain sources had outlined a design featuring a quad-curved or micro-curved display that wrapped gently around all four edges. The goal was an optical illusion of near-invisible borders while maintaining natural edge viewing and comfortable handling. Under-display Face ID and a front-facing camera would remove the Dynamic Island entirely. A glass rear panel would return, replacing the aluminum or titanium finishes of recent models. Some rumors even pointed to solid-state buttons with haptic feedback, further reducing mechanical elements. Internally, the project carried names like “Glasswing,” a reference to the transparent-winged butterfly, and was sometimes linked to Apple’s “Liquid Glass” software design language.
The concept traced its roots back to former design chief Jony Ive, who repeatedly spoke of the iPhone as ultimately becoming a single, uninterrupted slab of glass. Apple even filed patents years earlier for six-sided glass enclosures. By mid-2026, the rumors gained concrete momentum. Leakers claimed that production facilities had already been renovated and were awaiting equipment. The preferred approach, according to some Chinese supply-chain voices, involved a glass back with manufacturing quality comparable to the first-generation iPhone Air. The phone was expected to arrive in two sizes, roughly 6.3 and 6.9 inches, and was projected to command a premium blended average selling price of around $2,060—higher than any previous iPhone generation.
That ambitious timeline now looks uncertain. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee reported that supply-chain checks indicate the all-glass project has been halted because of low yields—the percentage of units that emerge from manufacturing without defects. Low yields drive up costs dramatically and make high-volume production impractical. Lee described the decision as “a major setback to efforts to bring in higher-priced iPhones amid soaring memory costs.” On the same day the analysis surfaced, Jefferies downgraded Apple from Hold to Underperform and cut its price target. Apple shares fell more than 2 percent in response.
The cancellation carries implications beyond one special model. Lee suggested Apple had intended to extend the all-glass design language to future Pro and Pro Max models, using the distinctive form factor as a way to sustain higher average selling prices and margins. With memory prices rising and the cost of on-device AI features adding pressure, the ability to charge a meaningful premium for design innovation has become more important. Removing that lever leaves Apple more dependent on other products, particularly the foldable iPhone expected around the same period. Jefferies views the foldable as the remaining primary driver of margin expansion, though it too is expected to launch at elevated price points—potentially starting above $2,000 for higher storage configurations.
Manufacturing challenges were always the unspoken risk. Creating a durable, high-yield glass enclosure that curves on multiple axes while housing complex under-display components is extraordinarily difficult. Glass is inherently more fragile than metal frames. Achieving consistent optical clarity, structural integrity, and acceptable drop resistance at Apple’s volume requirements has proven elusive for many previous industry attempts at aggressive curved designs. Earlier rumors had already noted that under-display camera and Face ID technology remained engineering hurdles even without the full glass-body ambition. The combination appears to have pushed the project past the point of commercial viability for a 2027 launch.
It is worth noting that Apple has not officially confirmed or denied the report. Plans this far in advance frequently shift, and some coverage has left open the possibility that only the most extreme all-glass elements were abandoned rather than the entire redesign. A more evolutionary update—slimmer bezels, refined materials, improved under-display components, or a return to a glass back without full quad-curved continuity—could still arrive. Apple has also demonstrated a willingness to wait for technology to mature rather than force a compromised product to market. The company waited years after the iPhone X before significantly advancing display and sensor integration again.
The broader industry context adds pressure. Rising component costs, particularly memory, are squeezing profitability across the smartphone sector. At the same time, competition from Android manufacturers continues to experiment with alternative form factors, including foldables and increasingly refined edge-to-edge designs. Apple’s strength has long been its ability to turn design milestones into cultural events that justify premium pricing and drive upgrade cycles. A subdued 20th-anniversary lineup would reduce one of those catalysts.
For consumers, the practical outcome is clearer. Anyone hoping for a dramatic visual leap in 2027 may need to adjust expectations. The foldable iPhone, if it materializes on schedule, is likely to absorb much of the attention and marketing energy. Standard Pro models may receive incremental refinements rather than a revolutionary new silhouette. The pure “slab of glass” ideal that has circulated for more than a decade remains a compelling long-term vision, but the latest supply-chain signals suggest it will not define the anniversary year.
Apple has repeatedly shown that it prioritizes execution over announcements. The company has delayed or quietly reworked ambitious projects before when yields, costs, or reliability fell short.
