Amritsar, the vibrant city in Punjab, is celebrated not just for its spiritual landmarks like the Golden Temple but also for its rich, indulgent non-vegetarian cuisine. Among the many delights, Mutton Chaap (also known as Mutton Chop or Chaamp) stands out as a true icon of Punjabi street food. This dish features tender mutton ribs or chops marinated with robust spices, slow-cooked or grilled over coal, and finished generously with pure desi ghee for that signature smoky, juicy, and melt-in-your-mouth texture.
In a city brimming with meat shops and dhabas, one name consistently rises above the rest in reviews, food vlogs, and local recommendations: Mohan Singh Meat Shop. Established in 1965, this humble, no-frills eatery has earned a legendary reputation for serving what many consider the finest Mutton Chaap in Amritsar—and perhaps even the country.
Why Mohan Singh Meat Shop Reigns Supreme
Food enthusiasts, including popular reviewers and visitors from across India, frequently declare Mohan Singh’s version as “next level,” “the best they’ve ever had,” and “heads and shoulders above the rest.” The chops are prepared with homemade spices, grilled over coal for a deep smoky flavor, and cooked in abundant desi ghee, resulting in meat that’s incredibly tender and richly flavored. Many describe it as pure heaven for mutton lovers.
The shop specializes exclusively in mutton dishes, with the chaap as the undisputed star. Other popular items include bheja (brain) curry and mutton curry, often paired with fresh tandoori roti or naan. Reviews highlight the consistent quality, even after decades, with some noting that the owner proudly claims the chops are exported to places like the US and Canada.
Located near Gilwali Gate Chowk, Chabutra, in the Nimak Mandi area (about 2.5 km from the Golden Temple), the spot is small and rustic, with limited seating—many patrons eat standing or opt for takeaway. It’s a classic street-side experience: authentic, unpretentious, and focused purely on flavor. Be warned, though—the heavy use of ghee makes it a decadent treat, best enjoyed when you’re ready to indulge.
Recent feedback from foodies and social media continues to reinforce its top position, with influencers and visitors calling it an “institution” and the go-to place for non-veg delights in Amritsar.
Solid Alternatives for Mutton Chaap Lovers
While Mohan Singh dominates the conversation, Amritsar’s non-veg scene offers other noteworthy spots worth exploring:
- Adarsh Meat Shop (often in the Ranjit Avenue area) is frequently praised as a strong contender, delivering juicy, ghee-laden chaap with great tenderness. Some comparisons place it close to Mohan Singh, though most still lean toward Mohan for the edge in flavor and tradition.
- Sunder Meat Shop earns mentions for its mutton tikka, bheja fry, and other items, but its chaap is often described as average or solid rather than exceptional.
These places embody the essence of Amritsar’s meat culture—simple setups, fresh ingredients, and bold Punjabi spices.
